Ours has the cover built in.
As for locking, sure, a person could probably full-time it for 30 years and never have a problem. For people like me, money has always been hard to come by so I lock up anything, especially if they cost a few hundred dollars. Replacing something like that can be a fairly major setback.

Thanks for the sweet idea, emm-dee

"Not too worried about theft of the Progressive 30 amp thingy but leaving it on the power pole when departing has been known to happen. Also, even though the units are supposed to be weather proof I still prefer to keep it dry. Solved both issues by moving it to the aft wall inside the pass through."

Now I have another project! Thanks, for sending me to the hardware store again, I think. Also, your installation of the protector is nice, neat, and inspirational!

Cover or lock your surge protector

We used a different approach. Made a 4" hole in the driver's side storage compartment of our 5th wheel. We now run an extension from the pedestal to inside the compartment, plug it in to the surge protector and run the camper cable from the protector back outside to the camper input plug. Stays reasonably safe and totally out of the weather.

I use a cable and paddle lock. I like the 3L bottle idea in a wet environment too.

My thought on this is that if my EMS is locked to the pedestal the dirt bags will move on down the line till they find one that isn't locked. I do like how the one photo showed it mounted inside a storage compartment. Randy.

We use a length of chain and a lock, the chain wraps around the pedestal. It won't deter a determined thief but will keep it from casually walking away. I usually just leave the EMS hanging down but if rain is coming I will put a plastic bag over it. Although I like the bottle idea (may have to splurge on some pop so that I can get the bottle since I don't drink pop much anymore) so I might try that. I also like the plastic container idea so I think I'll try both and see which one I like. Good ideas!
