It is a easy job, an electrician should be able to do it in an hour.

An electrician could do it no problem. I don't see any advantage to it over a portable unit though. Plug the protector in, plug your trailer into it and you are done. Both do the same thing.

Actually I think you could leave your trailer plugged into the surge and just have to plug it into shore power when you are ready.

Theft protection is probably the biggest advantage over a portable unit.

My wife never questions what I buy. She knows the trailer is "my baby". She knows how tight/broke I am...chances are if I bought one I thought about it for a bit before I ordered it.

PS: I will send you the number

Camping world has on sale the hard-wired 30 amp progressive industries unit with remote indicator for 219 US. in Canada on Amazon the same unit is $419.
I cant figure that our dollar on a 220$ unit is an additional 200$ in exchange.
someone is ripping us off.

Iwould say advantages are protected from theft and the elements plus the remote read out is inside so you dont have to go out to read errors or voltage

Chances are real good that I can get in your outside opening storage compartments. This is where most add ones would be located. Mine came with a metal ring to put a cable and lock on so I can lock it to the power post. Probably about just as secure as an installed one.

The portable one is weather proof, has to be to give us a Lifetime warranty.

In my sunseeker the hard wired unit is under my bed, some of the hard wired installs I've seen for trailers are inside a cabinet base. And the remote display can be put anywhere inside. Either portable or hard wired having the protection is the important point

Jim, I saw TURBS installation in his unit last year and I suspect most RVs would be similar: It installs near the main power panel inside the rig.

Correct, I removed distribution panel "5 minutes" and installed right behind it on the floor.
1 hr install.
It's basically under my sink non accessible to anyone.

I did my install today on my hardwired unit. Took me longer to figure out where I wanted to put it then it did to hook it up. The 2301 is a rear queen bed. The transfer switch is under the bed so that seemed to be the logical place to put the EMS. I was going to put the EMS after the transfer switch but decided to install it before it. I don't use the generator all that much and when I do it's only to run the A/C. We don't do any boondocking so I'm more concerned about campground electrical service problems. The generator is an onboard Onan/Cummins unit so I'm counting on it running without frying all the electronics in the coach.

Forest River left plenty of extra cable under the bed so all I had to do was cut it, strip it and attach it to the EMS. I installed the EMS where the transfer switch was originally mounted and moved the transfer switch a little forward. I mounted the readout on the front of the bed under the electrical panel. That way I won't be looking at blinking lights all night but it's easy to see from anywhere forward of the bed.

Before I buttoned everything up I plugged into shore power and made sure the system was working correctly.

While I had the bottom of the bed opened up I also fixed the uphill water tank fill problem that a lot of people were complaining about. The fill tube ran slightly uphill at one point so I pushed it down to where it's all downhill from the fill opening to the tank and zip tied it into place.

X2 I made a mental note about that last year. When the time comes to install our hardwired unit I will do the same!

Smart engineering Ron - in the unlikely event your EMS goes south, it's a simple process to get you rig powered up again!

IF you DARE to plug into a power outlet without your Progressive EMS!

Seems there are plenty of secure locations to install one. As long as you have room behind your panel that would be a logical and secure location, I didn't need any more work right now so went with the simple way. I can lock it to the post so don't see it taking a walk.

Now back to installing my new alarm system, spare battery, inverter and led lighting. Got to work while the heat and humidy is down for the next few days.

here's what I did with my "portable" unit. kind of a variation on turbs installation. I turned my "portable" into a "permanent" by cutting the supply wire and installing male and female plug/receptacle. this eliminates having the unit plugged into the power pedestal (and possible theft). if there is a problem with the unit I can unplug it and reconnect my power without it in line. I can also take it out and "test" sites if I want to. Also if change trailers I can take it with me.
