Dometic thermostat E1, furnace fan runs but no heat

I recently removed the AC from my trailer, reconnected the two wires from the Suburban NT-20SEQ furnace to the Dometic AC3313192 thermostat 12v-, 12v+ wires, leaving the blue "comm" wire unconnected. The furnace fan runs for a while then stops, but no heat. the thermostat displays the temp set point, alternating with the E1 error code. The furnace heats if I connect its two wires together. Any ideas why the thermostat is not communicating with the furnace with this setup? How should the furnace be connected to this thermostat?
