Electrical Issues

So I had a house built last fall and had a 30amp plug installed outside so I could plug in my 2018 Rockwood 2509S with no issues. So I uncover my camper today plug the power into the new outlet and nothing! So I go down to the basement check the breaker and it's not tripped. Then I check the breakers in the camper nothing is tripped. So then I get my tool you put in an outlet to see if you have juice it lights up. I have juice at the 30amp outlet and I have juice at the end of the cord that plugs into the camper. I go into the camper and nothing works. So for the hell of it I connect my adapter to the 30 amp plug and plug it into a110v outlet. I go into the camper and everything is working. So anyone have a suggestion on why the 30 amp cord and plug which are hot but not running the camper.

So power works fine with the same power cord with an adaptor into a 15/20 amp 110v outlet but not on the "special" 30amp 110v outlet?

If that's the case...Same cord in both scenarios but only works with the adaptor and in a 15/20 style outlet...then:

You need to have someone put a multimeter on the "special" 30amp outlet to see what is happening. Do not use that outlet until it's confirmed that it is wired correctly.

It is possible that the 30A plug was installed incorrectly. I strongly suggest you do not use the 30A outlet until it is tested. There is another thread running now where another member had a 30A outlet installed by a professional, but incorrectly. If the installer is not familiar with RV outlets there is a good possibility that they install the connections as they would for a 220V dryer connection. see photo attached for measurements

Did that 30A outlet work in the past or is this your first use of it. My thought would be that it is wired wrong. You may measure 120VAC but is it between the correct pins? Your cord works with the adapter and a regular outlet so that leaves just your new 30A as the culprit.

Make ABSOLUTELY sure he/she totally understands that it needs to be 120V AC 30 amp circuit, and definitely NOT a 240V AC 30 amp circuit!

So all the videos I've seen all have 3 wires green white. Black.. The wires going to my outlet are green black and red. Which is the hot. Black or Red. I reset the breaker in the basement and then go outside to the outlet and plug in my surge protector and it trips the breaker.

i would leave the breaker off and DO NOT PLUG ANYTHING INTO THAT RECEPTACLE.

it sure sounds like it is wired wrong. have it checked and get it wired correctly. use the diagrams that others have provided above. it sounds like it is wired for 240 volts but don't take my word, have it checked.

you mention a surge protector. is it just a surge protector or is it a full EMS device that will disconnect power if it is not to specs? if the later it may have disconnected the power when you plugged into that receptacle, ie no power. when you plugged into the other receptacle with the adapter the power was ok and the EMS allowed it in, no has power.

YOUR WIRING IS WRONG!!!!

Go back and carefully look at the photos in this thread. Look at the RV outlet wiring only, and then get an electrician who REALLY understands.

If the breaker takes two spaces it’s wrong.

Something is amiss here.
I suspect it is incorrect for your R/V.
Is it fed with a single breaker or a double breaker tied together?

Did you replace the double-pole 50 amp breaker with a single-pole 30 amp breaker? What you SHOULD have at the 30 amp outlet is a black wire, a white wire, and a green or bare copper wire. Those wires should be 10 gauge.

Personally, I think you are in over your head and flirting with disaster. Get a licensed electrician to sort things out and get you SAFELY connected.

Based on your response on post #9 your outlet is wired wrong.
Before you damage something or get hurt please have someone wire the outlet correctly and change the breaker.

Appears to be wired wrong and you have an open neutral. Do not use it until you get an electrician back out there to correct it.

I am glad you called electrician.

In a 240VAC outlet black and red are both hot, white is neutral and green is ground.

It sounds like your surge protector is doing it’s job, it sees more than 120VAC and it takes steps to stop the excess voltage.

Great!

Make sure he understands the 30a outlet for your R/V is 120v (NOT 240v) and gets fed by a SINGLE 30a breaker. The three wires will be HOT-NEUTRAL-GROUND.

There have been plenty of schematics and photos posted in this thread you can show him if he still doesn't get it.
