Firman Generator 3200 AND Progressive Industries DO LIKE EACH OTHER

HI

Just bought a Firman 3200 generator, does not work with PI surge protector.

Called Firman - no answer.

Called PI - told to bypass the PI SP 50 amp (using bypass switch), they say that ALL generators cause this fault - and it is safe to do that, just turn it back on when hooking up to a pedestal. ANY THOUGHTS??

You need a grounding plug for the generator. For sale everywhere but really simple to make your own. Just google “grounding plug for generator”. Then you don’t have to mess with the Progressive.

I would just run it in bypass unless you really don't trust your generator to have a proper voltage output.

i'm assuming the generator is producing power but the pi ems is not passing it. if so the pi ems will display an error code. it is most likely that the ground and neutral are not bonded. a way to fix this is to purchase of make your own 'edison plug' and plug that into one of the standard 120 vac receptacles on the generator. there are tons of posts on this forum and on the internet about why you have to do this with a ems unit and a portable generator. if this is what the problem is i would rather do this than go mess with the ems unit and forget to reset it. i'm surprised the pi did not mention this. i believe they even sell the 'edison plug'.

This is a common issue with most generators.

Here's a link to a Mike Sokol article on this issue. He has a picture of an "edison plug".

You do not need the EMS with the generator. EMS is designed to protect from bad peds. Not much happens with your gen.

Although rare, generators definitely can go over voltage or low voltage. Low voltage is usually due to a non-inverter generator running out of fuel. Better to let the EMS shut off power at 104 volts because a lot of stuff could be damaged with lower voltage.

a 15 amp plug will fit into a 20 amp receptacle. the notch on the side is to keep a 20 amp plug from fitting into a 15 amp receptacle.

OK .... done, turns out the 1st time getting a plug into the 15/20 amp (female) plug is a PAIN.

I am 6' 1" and 205 lbs and not wimpy. BUT it took (I thought I was going to break something) a lot of push, got it done, and it works. YA

Thanks
