Garage 50 amp service for new RV.

Our new RV unit will have 50 amp service installed in it. All our other ones were 30 amp units. I had a dedicated 30 amp RV outside plug for the current RV put in when the garage was built. I still have the 30 amp as I can have a place for my in-laws when they come up from Florida.

So now with the new unit requiring 50 amp service, I put one in for it.

This is the breaker panel in the garage. Using 6/3 with ground wire to outlet, 63' total run. 50 amp breaker combo is bottom left. 30 amp RV service breaker is bottom right. Main disconnect for the garage is in the main disconnect box close to the meter. Both house and garage main disconnects are in that separate panel box.

This is from the disconnect to the outlet.

Hot, Neutral, and ground from inside breaker. With ground and neutral to outlet.

Outside disconnect wired and cover in place.

Final installation.

Everything is ready and good to go for the new unit!

Looks fabulous. I'm looking at a 300 ft run. Expensive wire.

Did I miss the other post? The red hot line is on one leg of the main box. The black hot line is on the other leg of the main box. Is that what you mean? The white is the neutral, correct?

I don't know which other post your asking about, but in your 3rd picture, red is Line #1, black is Line #2, white is Neutral, and the bare copper wire is ground.

It is wired like the center image in the picture below except the red and black are reversed, which doesn't matter.

Thanks for the diagram, I have been saving info like that.

But it is working like it should, with 116 - 118 volts each line. Neutral and ground are correct. Hot lines red, and black should not matter as long as they are not the same feed out of the box. Is that correct?

Gary.

The "other post" was deleted. I saw it but I think the author found an error in his post.

That is kind of what I thought too. No problems with it, just was wondering.

Yes, that is correct. There are a lot of diagrams and documents in the forums about 50 amp service for your RV. Also for 30 amp service for those interested.

The links below were compiled by another member of FRF.

Disclaimer: These links and articles were compiled by wmtire. He is a site team member of forestriverforums (FRF). If you give thanks, then give it to him. I had nothing to do with gathering the information, I’m just passing it along.

“I always recommend these following links to newer RV owners. It explains a RV's different electrical systems, as well as what works off of 120 volt AC vs. 12 volt DC. Not knowing your RV experience, The below is a copy and paste, and I usually recommend it to those just starting out. Some of it, you may already know, or may not be applicable to your particular RV. You will be able to filter out what pertains to your situation or not. I would suggest you read the electric threads and energy management first, and then the converter thread. This will help explain your different electrical systems of your RV, and how they operate...as well as what the converter does. The very first link will explain what operates off what system.” - wmtire

What is the need for 50amp power at home? I'd just use an adapter and use the existing 30amp service. Doesn't 30amp power runs A/C?

Some install 30 amp or 50 amp RV service at their homes so they can use the RV as a MIL suite for friends and family visits.

I have 50 amp service on my RV, but I only ran a 30 amp service because I do not live in my RV when it is at the house. 30 is more than enough for all of my loads/uses. The single AC unit (alternate front & rear) I leave on for dehumidification purposes will only draw 20-22 amps when OAT is 90+. Thermostat set to 86 (82 actual) in winter and 90 (86 actual) in the summer months (6 to 9 of them).

Install looks good. Is there a specific reason why you opted for a load center box, and a receptacle box?

Just curious.

I'm also wondering why you need a separate set of breakers outside for the power, since it's for your own use, not in an rv park, and you already have the double-pole breakers in the house.

but, I also question why you need a new separate dedicated 50a service supply to your new RV, parked right next to your home... it can run quite well on your existing 30a service ( you have someone living in it during very hot summers or very cold winters ? ) : )

As an electrician I like the disconnect as not be plugging in camper under load. Outlet and camper plug will last much longer and no chance to get shocked by touching prongs when plugging in.

Yes, 30 amp will run one AC. I see no need for 50 amp power at home unless somebody is living in it.

Yes, this is the reason for the disconnect for the 50 amp outlet.

I'm just OCD on things like this. No other reason than it works for me.

Even if someone was living in it 30amp will do the job and running only one ac done it many a time traveling when 50amp not available. Seems like a little over kill to ad when you already had 30amp. Later RJD

My hands are already hurting just thinking about managing that gauge wire in a box with breakers/receptacles.
