GFI and exterior receptacles
Last night my general area, 20 miles N of Detroit and west of me received 3-4 inches of rain. My yard is still flooded along with many roads. NO WATER IN THE BASEMENT. But that is not my post. I was going to add another receptacle in the cabinet of my sink area. There was only 2 in the kitchen area and none at a lower level to plug in a vacuum or whatever. I was going to tie it in to an existing receptacle in a outside storage where my small fridge is located. That is when I noticed the plug with my night light was not lit but dead. It is tied into the kitchen into the bathroom GFI. Tried checking the GFI and was not sure if if the GFI had malfunctioned. New GFI and still the same. Remove the receptacle from the small fridge area, check it out and all looked good. All I could think about was how I was going to run a new cable to this area. I looked inside and found the wire came from the outside receptacle. I took it out and apart only to find the paper that was used to wrap the ground wire in the receptacle was not removed, wet, and shorting out to the power lines. THE GFI WORKED! The outside receptacle and the antenna housings were sealed with a foam backer. Applied silicone.
