help with circuit

I'm having issues with a 2013 vengance 25v with 50 amp. Everytime i plug it to the genny it trips the breaker on the genny. I have everything off in the trailer it runs fine. Flip on just the ac and it comes on runs about a minute then kicks out. I have the 50 - 30 amp reducer to plug into the genny. I'm using a champion 4000/3500 with the 30amp rv plug built in. I Moved the genny to my buddies trailer it ran everything fine. Put 6500 on Mine same thing. My trailer is 1 week old. When I did my wall thru it was plugged into the wall at the dealers so everything was fine. Is there some stupid rookie mistake I'm making. Seen several people using this same genny go run their toyhaulers.

Do you have an EMS installed? If so, have you tried bypassing it?

Otherwise, I'd try to turn all of the breakers off inside of the camper and try the generator with no load and see what happens. Then them on one by one to see if you can isolate the problem.

Don't want to sound stupids but don't know what ems is. I did not pull any f uses. I had all lights off the tv off the fridge off the ac off. I let the genny r un for about 5 minutes then turned just ac on. It took a few the it came on started blowing cold air for about a minute then click. Shut ev everything down moved my genny to buddies setup ran it fine. Tried my huge loud genny same thing.

EMS like this - http://www.progressiveindustries.net/ems_hw50c.htm

But if you don't know, you likely don't have one.

Hopefully some other folks speak up- I really don't even know enough to be dangerous.

You say you've turned everything off but unless you've done that by shutting off every one of the circuit breakers (except the two masters) then you haven't really done it. (In other words, you've probably forgotten something like the water heater or the converter.)

Yes you are correct I didn't shut it off with the breakers. Is it normal to have to do that each time you fire it up? If so they didn't explain that they just said plug it in

I think mostly you need to make sure the fridge and water heater are running on propane only as they can draw quite a bit of current. The converter can also be a bit of a load.

Check to make sure you never run the water heater on electric when running on the generator.

Turn off climate control on your fridge (if possible).

Your generator should be able to handle the AC, but ONLY the AC.
A hard start capacitor and a fan delay relay will help reduce start up load.

if you have a 50 amp plug would that be due to a second air conditioning unit? If so are you running both of them? 30 amps will only power one unit generally... Sorry if you were already aware of this.

He said he was using an adapter and I think that should only power one side of the panel. Can anyone who uses an adapter verify this?

Turning off breakers isn't a bad idea... As to what you are able to run on your generator will be a camper to camper scenario... It will be different for most everyone... But you should be able to run the ac, lights and an outlet or two for little things shouldn't hurt anything... it will be a trial and error thing for you for a while...

David,

You are drawing too much current "as is" and we are trying to locate some high draw item that is overloading your generator when the compressor and fan are running as well.

ONLY by removing power to everything and then running JUST the air conditioner can we locate the current draw.

IF your generator can't handle the AC alone, it can be the problem.

I am NOT aware of ANY water heater that is "auto" as only the fridge has that kind of computer controlled source seeker.

IF your water heater is a Suburban you may have an AC switch OUTSIDE (small black switch) that controls the AC heating element.

Is there a step-by-step procedure for starting up the RV on the generator or is it just start the generator then plug in the big table to the side of the RV and go

If the water heater was on auto then yes it was running on electric. As it was said previously said make sure all of the appliances are off when you plug it in to your gen. Anything that will run on gas should be set to gas ( not auto ), I.e. your frig and water heater. Anything that has to produce heat is a huge current draw. So on start up, its all probably to much for your gen. Another thing to consider is if your gen. has an eco mode. Make sure that is turned off at start up. After everything is up and running then you can turn that on. As the amp demand on start up will often go up faster than the gen. can supply and will cause a breaker to trip. Its the overdraw protection on your gen. that causes that.

No particular order to turning the breakers back on except of course the AC first. After that, don't turn on anything you don't really need.

The small black switch outside turns on/off the electric heating element, not the propane.

Lou, a 30->50 adapter powers both legs of the 50 from the one leg of the 30.
