LED running lights
Has anyone replaced their brake, tail and clearance light bulbs with led bulbs? I am just wondering if it’s that simple a job or if it requires a different socket. Also are they any brighter than originals.
Thanks
John

Yes, I did it on my 2014 A122 A-frame. The tail lights were 1157 and the marker lights were 194, IIRC (I've since sold the trailer). You can buy LED equivalents from auto parts stores and Walmart, however these sources tend to be spendy. I ended up buying 20 194 LED bulbs from Amazon. Some gotchas/points I ran into:
- Many LED replacements are "super brights". I thought my lights were adequate brightness before the switch over, and did not want to blind other drivers. So I avoided super brights. The regular brightness LEDs are still brighter than the bulbs they replaced - the marker lights are now visible in my mirrors in daylight.
- Many of the 194 replacement LED bulbs were too tall to fit inside the marker light fixtures on my camper. I had to measure and select the LED bulbs to fit the space.
- One of the advantages of replacing with automotive LED bulbs is that the driving circuits will easily handle the wide range of voltages found in campers and cars. Regular LEDs designed with regulated computer power supplies will often blow when hit with 14.4+V charging.
- I achieved what I wanted by the making the switch - freeing up current from the tow vehicle to run the fridge on DC and charge the battery instead of being used on lights. My new 2019 A-frame came with all LEDs - internal and external.

Make sure the 1157 bulbs you choose say dual output or have a high and low rating. I had received some that were one steady output which defeats the purpose of taillight.
194’s I just replaced all of mine after 5 years as some were flickering. Think I bought 20 for $10.

I replaced all of the exterior and interior fixtures on my Damon MH. The led fixtures were much brighter that the originals. I was very satisfied with the project. I got everything from ebay and they were all still working after 5 years when we sold the MH.
Our TT came with all led lights inside and out. We have put over 15,000 miles on this TT and everything stlll works like new.

Just curious, do you have the name of the place where you purchased the lights?
Thanks

Just so you know, you will have to also install a lighted license plate holder

Hopefully this is the best place to post this. I purchased all new led marker light assemblies to replace the factory incandescent markers. I mean it’s 2020 and a new TT should come with them anyways.
My question to you fine folks is will there be a hyper flash situation with the upgrade as I plan on doing the rear brake light assembly as well?
Or since it runs off my TV it should not matter.
Thanks

What does hyper flash mean? I upgraded ALL of my running lights and brake light to LED and there are no issues.

If you have a camera there would not be any on the running lights. The rest will depend on the replacement lights you used and if they had something built in to stop it. I would wait and see if you have issues before putting the resistors in.
If you do have any issues its 3 resistors to completely get rid of it. One on L turn, one on R turn and one for running lights. I put them on the tongue in the juction box. Fords may have issues detecting the trailer attached as well with LEDs and no resistors since they use current to tell if it is.
Hope that helps.

I have a 2018 F-150. Zero problems with the vehicle working with LED trailer lights.

The only scenario in which the "hyperflash" comes into play when converting trailer to LED is if your tow vehicle has amber LED turn signals (or you have replaced amber turn signal bulbs with LEDs), AND the converter from amber to red turn signals installed as part of your tow wiring doesn't handle the low current LEDs of the trailer properly.
In the other scenarios, a mix of LED and incandescent turn signals doesn't cause problems because the tow vehicle converter is already handling a mix of currents.
I think this was an issue a few years ago in some European vehicles that did an early conversion to all LED lights. I had no issue with my Hyundai Entourage, but my RV dealer installed the amber to red converter and the other trailer wiring. My 2014 A122 A-frame started with incandescent bulbs on the exterior which I later converted to LED bulb replacements.
