New 12RK owner, I'm lost!

Just bought a 12RK, our first camper ever. We bought it at a dealer two hours away. I just installed two 6 volt deep cycle batteries, they seem to power the pump, the radio, and at least one outlet. The lights won't come on. I assumed the trailer would come with an owner's manual, it doesn't, so I'm flying blind here. Am I doing something wrong? We have yet to even plug the trailer in, however when we bought it, they had pulled it in, plugged it in and said everything was working. Like I said, this is all new to us, any help would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard. This thread may help somewhat in your Flagstaff E-Pro 12RK

https://www.forestriverforums.com/fo...ts-157524.html

The fact you already changed the batteries, possibly without really understanding the different electrical systems (explained in the link above) gives me pause. as to whether you may have connected them correctly of even possibly backwards, (which will blow the reverse polarity fuses in the converter)

Please read the electrical links in the above link (as well as the converter/inverter link there)

A pic of your batteries and cable connections would help tremendously in us trying to help troubleshoot things. Sometimes on a RV, the battery cable colors will confuse those who are used to how they are on vehicles (which may not be the same).

Also if wired backwards, any LED lights will not work.

Besides the document to read as posted above.... did your unit not come with batteries? How did they do the walk through with you?
Have you tried plugging it in to house power to make sure everything works plus to see if maybe the batteries you just installed aren’t fully charged.

I would think if the batteries were connected backwards nothing would work. No?
The OP said several things are working. Just not the lights.

The pump might not matter or it ran backwards and not sure about an inverter for an outlet to work.

.

Actually some things will. It will blow the reverse polarity fuses to the converter, so the converter itself will not work, so now the 12 volt DC items in the RV will only operate directly off the battery(s) even if plugged into a 120 volt AC source (aka shore power). Some things will still work, but may run backwards. You may notice your switches run opposite now, on things like your electric stabilizers, jacks, etc. This is always a sign that your 12 volt DC current is reversed. If a switch that was up, now works as down.......somethings backwards.

You blow the reverse polarity fuse to the converter, even if connected wrong for a second, and you correct the battery terminals afterwards. The converter will be non functional till these reverse polarity fuses are replaced. even if the battery terminals have been corrected.

Also the OP stated they replaced the (I'm assuming 12 volt battery) with two 6 volts, which requires a wiring change. This is what gives me pause on several things, and would like to see the wiring on the batteries.

I wondered if it wasn't just straight up red + and black-. Couldn't find enough online, just made an ASSumption. The two cables on the right side of the photos are "thicker" onesClick image for larger version

Curious about the OP posting as Bajmm and replying as Bajmm1.
Forest River owners manuals are only available for download as PDF's and are not included at time of sale. The manuals are generic and not model specific.

A moderator should be able to fix it.

You don't perhaps have a pic of everything installed with the two six volt batteries, as you stated earlier you installed.

Is this a new or used unit? Did it come with a battery? I would try connecting the red wires to the positive of one battery and the black wires to the negative of the other battery. Then use a cable to connect the unused terminals together. Unless this is how you have already done it.

My 2020 camper came with manuals to include basics on the camper it self. Later RJD

It is a barely used one. When we purchased it from the dealer two hours away, he told me there was a battery, they had it in the garage "charging" up the battery. When we got home, the next day went to turn on lights and such, nothing happened, checked the battery case, no battery. He sent me a check for the battery, however I apparently have no idea what I'm doing. I have not tried hooking up the way you have suggested, thanks.

I hooked up one battery, the reds to the positive, and the blacks to the negative. First time I just hooked up the thinner, lower gauge wires black to negative, red to positive, then when things didn't all work, I hooked up the thicker gauge wires.

You will get lots of advice and suggestions. You say you have two 6 volt batteries. Letís make sure the are cabled properly. You should have one jumper cable running from the positive terminal of one battery to the negative terminal of the second battery. Once this is in place nothing else goes onto those two terminals! That leaves you an unused positive on one battery and an unused negative on the other. These are the terminals that you want to connect you cables to.

Do you have a multi meter and can you use it? You are going to be testing dc voltage. Put one test probe on the unused positive terminal and the other on a good chassis ground. It should read zero volts. Now put the large black cable onto the unused negative terminal. Take the same voltage reading again. It should read over 12 volts. Is so you have the ground connected.

Then take the large red cable and attach it to the unused positive terminal. Once done go test the lights, fans, awning. Etc. they should work. If not there is a blown fuse or circuit breaker.

The other two red cables are probably for the jack / landing gear, propane detector, or inverter. Most times these are wired directly to the positive battery terminal.

Test the jack / landing gear and see it it is working. If not trace one of the unconnected red wires to see which one powers the jack / landing gear. Connect it and see if he jack / landing gear now works.

In the newbie link I provided you in post #2, there is a link to something called "the 12 volt side of life."

It will show you how to wire two 6 amp batteries in order to get 12 volt DC from them (required by your RV) with diagrams.

Also. one of the reasons I asked about the battery connections, and want a pic...is that some RV's have black and white battery wires, where the black is the positive wire.......but you seem to have black and red, where red should be the positive.

All the more details you give us, help us help you. This is what gets lost in internet troubleshooting, and it requires a whole lot of effort just to get pertinent details.

Things like it didn't have a battery installed when you got it, are very pertinent.
