new service

I'm having a new electrical service put into my house and garage, so I had a 30 amp plug installed for my trailer.Click image for larger version

Gonna do the same with the new house. But maybe 50 amp for upgrade purposes and use the dogbone.

Does it require any more kwh to run 30 amps off of a 50 amp than off a 30 amp? I can’t see why it would but I have no idea.

I wouldn't think it would, it's still only 30 amps of power.

That’s what I’m thinking. But don’t know if there’s some kind of math that says otherwise.

I wanted an outlet for my camper in my garage. I ended up having a 50 amp circuit run as it was minimally more expensive for the additional wire. I am now ready if I ever decide to upgrade to a rig that requires 50 amp service.

Looks good. Have you checked to make sure the electrician wired it for 120 volts and not 240 volts? We have way too many instances of where an electrician does indeed miswire it, and thus damages the members RV when they connect to it.

We keep this thread in the FAQ section, which has a printable pdf file that members can give out to the electricians to make sure they don't get confused if they have not seen the NEMA TT-30 outlet before.

The easy way to check, is to look in your house/garage electrical distribution panel, and the circuit breaker that goes to this new outlet. If it's a double pole breaker (twice as wide as a single pole breaker or tandem breaker), then it's 240 volts. If it's on a single pole breaker or tandem breaker, you should be good to go.

You can notice how in the pic below the double pole circuit breaker takes up slots #10 and #12 in the panel...which makes it 240 volts. You do NOT want this for a 30 amp RV.

The single pole breaker only takes up one slot. #14, which makes it 120 volts.

The tandem breaker, which allows two circuits on one breaker, also only takes up one slot, #16....which also makes it 120 volts.
