No power from generator.

Brought the camper home today to play with some projects . The morning was great but as our Florida weather does it started to get hot. We dont have the house wired for 50 amp so i started the generator and no power. I checked the basics fuses, breakers, and of course my multi meter battery is dead so tomorrow i will dig deeper. So what is more common the breakers on the geni or the transfer switch? It is the Cummins 5500. Any advice is very appreciated!

Did you check the circuit breaker on the generator? Sometimes they trip. Other could be a stuck transfer switch.

Do you have a transfer switch or do you have to plug your shore power cord into a receptacle inside the R/V somewhere or even at the generator?

Let us know which type you have before we start chasing down into an unnecessary rabbit hole.

OK... first thing to do then (when you get your multimeter working) is check to see if you have voltage coming from the generator into the transfer switch. (with the genny running of course)

run an extension cord from a household plug outlet and see if you have Shore Power, you can easily use that instead of a '50amp' outlet - you just have less 'amps' to use...

I have an "OLD" John Deere construction Alternator, and if it sits for more than a month, It will not generate any voltage or current until I run it for 3 to 5 minutes. Then when it finally self excites, full power is available. Doubt that is your problem, but I found it interesting.... And it is only for power outages, not camping.. That is the Honda's job..

As has been said, run the generator for several minutes until it has warmed up and see if it produces electricity. Flip the breakers manually, a tripped breaker is not necessarily in the down position. If this doesn't do it get the multimeter out and start testing on the generator and work your way down the system.

I like 5picker's idea for starters. You must have a digital multimeter. The old Simpson 260 has its advantages. A battery is only needed for resistance reading in it.

I vote for an operating voltmeter.

We have a 15 amp cord ran to maintain the batteries. And that works. So that side is ok.

You can use a 120V test lamp (even a light bulb) across he generator contacts of the transfer switch to test if there's power coming from the generator. Wear rubber gloves when doing this unless you are very very comfortable working on live 120V circuits.

Ok i have an update. Went and got my meter up and running. Fired up the Cummins went inside started to remove the drawers that hide the transfer switch in the cabinet. Went to remove the cover of the switch (haven't yet touched it). I hear the microwave beep meaning the 110 is now running. Scratching my head i turned the power off and turned it back on same result. So i never really realized it took so long for the process to start or is it that the transfer switch is getting slower? Or maby im just that impatient and want results now. I guess all and all im happy it is working. The DW isn't happy because i let it ruin my good mood the other day for what seems now for no good reason [emoji849]. Thanks to all who replied and it sums up to user error.
