Poll of electrical saved by add-on protector

I'm curious how many burn-out, toasted electronics have been prevented by an add-on "protective device"

A caveat: The fact the "bells and whistles" on your device went off are not to be counted as a save. The manufacturers have to make you feel good spending your money, so they make sure the bells and whistles go off at the first hint of a dip/spike.

What I'm looking for are your neighbors having their electrical stuff damaged while you had no issues. 5-10 campers up at the office complaining how their stuff is ruined. That would be counted as a "real save" by your purchase.

Thanks

My Autoformer has warned me of two bad pedestals in the last 1.5 years (open neutral and bad ground, IIRC) so I didn't connect.

I count those as "saves".

To only consider situations where multiple other folks had problems may be ignoring the possibly more common issue of a bad individual pedestal.

30 and 50 amp circuit testers are cheap maybe 15 a piece. Have not in 7 yrs seen a units electrical components fried from a surge but i'm sure it can happen . progressive EMS will cut out at low voltage i believe 105V and less which can protect your ac but also cuts power so you sit in the heat . some parks electrical grids are old and can not handle the large loads put on them . Good luck getting the park to care . Auto former can solve that

So I get the feeling you are only planning to accept responses that will help you prove your opinion that EMS devices are not worth their cost. OK, maybe… but in my worse case example, my EMS shut off all my power about 20 times in one night and that for high voltage. When it stopped raining enough for me to go out, my trusty Craftsman volt meter said my pedestal was delivering 138vAC to the trailer. My EMS cut power at 132vAC. Should I have experimented to see if my electronics could handle 138vAC? Probably not.
The COE park chased off all campers and closed the park.

Your right about my feeling and since you didn't mention damage to other campers ..........we can just leave it at that.

Low power will cause my EMS to shut down. Low power damage is usually not immediate but cumulative over time. We camp with a group of 4 other campers. None use an EMS nor auto former. We camp in extreme heat with low power a constant problem. 3 have replaced air conditioners. No real proof but I'm convinced my combination of EMS/Autoformer is protecting me.

I can see how that would be your perspective on a conclusion to this "experiment".

We pulled into a campground and our EMS said 'reverse polarity' so we moved sites. Talking with other campers, they reported that a small rv had pulled into the original site, plugged in, and blew the circuit breakers all through the park. Didn't talk to anyone who reported damage, but we only talked to a couple of people.
We got an EMS to protect the appliances from low voltage. We can't 'prove' that it protected us, but it's protected us from 'open ground' and 'reverse polarity' at many campgrounds. Plus some campgrounds that had 'low voltage' when we were running the a/c.
Cheap insurance for our appliances.

Thanks this is what I'm looking for. And yes, your correct low voltage damage is cumulative.

We’ve ALWAYS had my Progressive Industries power and surge protection in our 50amp motorhome and our present 30amp motorhome.

We camp at a lot of older campgrounds and Provincial campgrounds where they sometimes can’t provide power adequately for the number of people needing their air conditioner and other appliances running. I’ve seen the voltages dip to where my PI cuts off power to my motorhome before the damage really starts, even though others continue to run. Over the years…..who knows. Damage is cumulative.

You have to go into 'Go Advanced' to create a poll. Do it! It's fun! I do it all the time! Just to revel in responses of how flawed my polls are! The whining you create is half the fun.

You won't get useful data asking for events that didn't happen. And the sample size from any "poll" is insufficient as well. Folks with surge protectors who have never had a problem are no more proof they work than folks without surge protectors who have never had a problem are proof they're not needed.

Example: I have a stuffed plush Jackalope in my camper 24/7 to protect the trailer from vermin. Must work 'cuz no vermin damage or signs. Now that I think about it no electrical surge damage either -- gotta be Jacky's presence since I don't use a surge protector. (I do use an AutoFormer(tm) if voltage is low.)

Good analogy. You'd have been fun in my logic class. Mine is not as fancy as a AutoFormer, it just shuts stuff down (Progressive). And it's never triggered on me yet. But it DID tell me I was on a bad outlet once. (At transmission shop I plugged into to test new A/C unit).

Our Georgetown with a Progressive EMS installed was plugged in at our seasonal site when a storm went threw the campground. A tree fell on the overhead power lines, knocked the lines down and narrowly missed our motorhome. (Which was less than 6 months old at the time.)

Including ours, there are 10 sites supplied by these lines. Six of these RVs had at least converters damaged and some had additional electrical and electronic issues. Ours had no damage.

Were we protected by the EMS? I have no clue. Since I was not fortunate enough to have a jackalope on hand, I am sure glad I at least had a backup.

Jackalope (click me).

Kcounter found a rather deluxe version that is sure to be even more effective since we know it's better if it costs more.
