When Weight Matters

My GC15's are 64lb each, so 128 lbs plus cables at least 130 lbs.

Lithium is the only way to save weight.
Yes, flooded Group 24 batteries are typically lighter than Group 24 AGM and GC2 batteries when you're attempting to get similar Ah. Switch to lithium and weight goes down but then you can't put a 200 Ah battery or two 100 Ah batteries in the same footprint box as you're replacing.

Some examples from one location:

G24 Flooded 42 lb. 65 Ah x 2 = 84 lb. 130Ah

G24 Flooded 45 lb. 75 Ah x 2 = 90 lb. 150Ah

G24 AGM 52.4 lb. 78 Ah x 2 = 104.8 lb. 156 Ah

G24 AGM 57.7 lb. 76 Ah x 2 = 115.4 lb. 152 Ah
https://www.batteriesplus.com/produc...4m/sli24agmdpm

GC2 Flooded 60.5 lb. 215 Ah x 2 = 121 lb. 215 Ah

GC2 Flooded 64 lb. 230 Ah x 2 = 128 lb. 230 Ah

GC2 Flooded 68 lb. 235 Ah x 2 = 136 lb. 235 Ah

What's the difference between GC2 and other GC's? I have GC15's. 230 amp hours.

**edit - nevermind, looks like GC2 is the general dimensions or footprint.

The stock container in at least my unit can hold two G24 or GC2 batteries.

I ended up sticking with the deep cycle wet batteries. Got 2 interstate 27s for $180 total. Also installed quick disconnect to make sure nothing drains them in storage. I don't have an issue maintaining water and charging so went that route. Will soon see how they perform. Thanks everyone for all the great info and feedback.

AGM battery charging

[QUOTE=NXR;2713833]Contact Progressive Dynamics and ask them. They responded to my query about my PD9270 and AGM batteries in a day. Mine works on either so perhaps yours will also.

Installed 4 AGM house batteries and the progressive system was reprogrammed for the charge cycle for this type of battery. Have always had great service from AGM batteries over wet batteries

I have a 2012 Forest River Solera 24MS on a Sprinter chassis with the same step location as you do. I had to replace the Trombetta solenoid in the battery management unit in order to get the batteries to charge correctly as it had just worn out. I replaced the original marine style batteries with Trojan AGM batteries in 2015. They are still going strong and the original converter charged them just fine. I had to replace the original WIFCO converter last year after the black tank flush anti siphon installed in the space with the converter and ATS were sprayed with water when the plastic anti siphon valve failed. No place to install the valve elsewhere but I replaced with a high quality brass one and replaced the converter with a lithium capable Progressive Dynamics one for the future. No worries topping off the battery water anymore. Slightly less battery capacity but this has not caused us any problems 89 Ah instead of say 92 Ah capacity.

Batteries

Well I will answer your question with me asking one, what is your style of camping, RV parks, or boon docking. The AGM will give you more capacity between charges so the investment may be better for you. Remember you need to be looking at the AH (amp hour) capacity the higher the AH the better you are. AGM's are also more forgiving if you do manage to discharge your battery beyond 50%. This is a size thing again, the higher the AH the longer it will take for your on board charger will take to charge so looking into a higher capacity charger may be in order, all about your camping style and needs.

AGM Batteries

A year ago we replaced the original batteries on our 2017 Sunseeker 2290S with Canadian Tire MOTOMASTER NAUTILUS deep cycle AGM Group Size 27 92Ah batteries. Why? because they are more forgiving if discharged, have a lower self-discharge rate (don't need to be charged as often over winter) and have better low-temperature performance. This last factor may be of interest for those in colder climates.

Our PD4560K18LS8 Progressive Dynamics converter seems to charge at a bit higher voltage which suits the AGM's quite well, about 14.5V boost charge before settling down to 13.2 V in storage/trickle mode.

We noted a big improvement from the original 4-year old batteries when boondocking.

I think this is a good video to watch on different types of batteries. I've posted it on other battery threads.

Some reading mentioned the converter may not handle charging AGM batteries correctly and Im not sure how to determine this. I have a 2018 Sunseeker MBS with 2 house batteries and a PD4080K power converter. Any advice appreciated.
I bought a 20 watt Renology flexible solar panel - our camper is stored outdoors so the 20 watt panel will keep the AGM battery fully charged. I asked Renology if I needed a charge controller for that setup and they said no. The panel is clipped to the battery poles.

BATTLE BORN AND PROBABLY other offer a LiFePo that fills the space of a GC2

My understanding is with a small panel like this the controller is not necessary. However, As I remember on cloudy days it will discharge the battery!

20 watts means under 5 amps dc on it’s best day. Which you will see few of in the winter.

Car places like Autozone sold these things in the past. They are ok, but cannot be left unattended.

I would let it run a month or so and see what happens.
