shunt

I ordered a Renogy battery monitor, I have neg cables coming from my battery, one goes to chassis ground, one to the inverter, and neg cable going to controller. When I go to hook the shunt up, would the chassis ground be the best cable to hook to? Thanks

I suggest you follow the instructions on the installation video.

Everything flows through the shunt. All the negative wires come off the battery terminal and connect to the new shunt. The other end of the shunt will be the only connection to the negative post of the battery.

I was just down looking at my battery bank, I have 4-6vts hooked up. I pull my hot from one end, and the neg from the other side, on the neg post, I have the controller/converter and battery ground(chassis) I think I can cut the neg 1/2 way from battery bank to chassis ground and put the shunt in there, thoughts?
I'm assuming this, because all negative cables hook up there. Sounds like Tacoma stated.
Thanks

please read the installation instructions!

there can only be one cable from the battery negative terminal to the battery side of the shunt.

disregarding where you intend to place the shunt the easiest install steps would be:
-remove ALL cables from the negative battery terminal and connect them to the load side of the shunt
-purchase a new cable and connect it between the negative battery terminal and the battery side of the shunt.

depending upon where you want to install the shunt and if the existing cable will reach this location you may want to install a buss bar. connect all negative cables you removed from the battery and install an additional new cable between the load side of the shunt and the buss bar.

and to make things more confusing, since you are going to be working with the cables this may be the time to also install a shutoff switch. wire it between the load side of the shunt and the existing battery cables.

you want current to flow from the battery through the shunt, though any disconnect switch, and finally to the cables that route it to ground and other devices.

for the shunt to work ALL current going into or out of the battery must pass through the shunt. there can only be ONE cable connected to the battery negative terminal and this runs to the battery side of the shunt. all other cables that were originally connected to the battery negative terminal negative terminal get connected to the load side of the shunt.

if you have multiple 12 volt batteries in parallel, leave the jumper cable that connects the tow battery negative terminals. but make sure there is only one cable leaving either of the battery terminals and this cable goes to the shunt. no other cables connected to the battery negative terminals.

Here is a very rough drawing of my current hookups (top pic), primary the ground.
So the bottom has where the shunt will go,I pull all neg cables, except the ground to the chassis ground. I'll make a short neg cable hook it on the neg post to battery side of shunt, then take the neg cables from the inverter, controller hook to the load side of shunt. Sorry for all the posts. Thanks

That won’t work, the chassis ground cable will let amperage flow without going thru the shunt. All 3 of your ground wires need to be on the same load side of the shunt. Move the chassis ground wire from the battery to the load side of the shunt.

So in this pic, how do you ground the battery bank. All they do is hook all the negs to the shunt, so I don't need to ground the battery bank? ThanksClick image for larger version

The batteries are grounded thru the shunt. Just move the ground wire from the battery to the load side of the shunt.

as stated, move what you are calling the chassis ground from the battery terminal to the load side of the shunt. for the shunt to work ALL current must flow through it. with the chassis ground connected as in you diagram current can flow from your negative battery terminal to ground without going through the shunt.

there can only be one connection from the battery negative terminal and that goes to the battery side of the shunt. current will flow from the battery, through the shunt (and get recorded), and then to wherever it needs to go using the cables on the load side of the shunt.

In order for the monitor to work correctly along with the converter, one must have ONLY one cable between the negative terminal on the battery and it MUST be connected directly to the shunt. All other cables, previously on the negative terminal of the battery go to the load side of the shunt.

If one ends up with more than one cable on the negative terminal of the battery or on the negative end of the shunt, it isn't installed correctly.

The OP is using 4 GC batteries parallel/series so there will be 2 cables on the negative post of the battery, one to the shunt and the other to another battery.

Not sure what controller your picture is referring to but this is how it should look like.

This 12v BATTERY is the combination of all four 6v CELLS. In combination they're just a single big battery. Use as one battery. Charge as one battery.

One (1) external wire to the 12v BATTERY negative terminal. It's marked "to ground" in this diagram. The 12v BATTERY is the combination of all four 6v CELLS with only two external connections: 1. to +12V and 2. to Ground.

(I'd connect the ground wire to the other 6v cell to help equalize the set but this diagram is otherwise correct.)

Thanks to everyone, got it hooked up and working. So I have 4, 6vts hooked up, 215ah each battery, so 430ah from 4 batteries, do I set the monitor to 430, or 215 usable (50%) ? thanks
