Slow Roasting in Arizona - Generator Quits While Driving

I could use some help.

Problem Description:
Our Cummings Onan QG-5500 quits when driving. The gas tank is full. The generator runs for over 24 hours without any issues when parked. Once we start driving, the generator stops working.

Model #: 5.5 HGJAB-1038L

Action to Date:
I've taken our Forest River FR3 29DS to two separate RV service and repair facilities. Neither shop could determine why the generator stops working when we start moving.

Traveling in the southwest during the summer is brutal without the A/C from the "box".

Recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

What shutdown code does it flash when it shuts down?

This is just a guess. It I would look at fuel delivery problems or possibly oil levels. The motion while traveling might be causing oil level sensor problems. Again just guesses. The shutdown codes should help point to the issue.

Thank you CHICKDOE. I'll replicate the issue and check the codes.

+1
Oil level, could be too much or not enough.

Fuel pump overheats and quits? Engine exhaust while driving blows towards the pump?

Thank you Sergiop. I've scheduled an inspection and servicing through a Cummins Onan service center. I'll provide an update after I learn more.

there is an onan cummins service center in avondale (very near intersection of i-10 and loop 101). i had them look at a problem with our generator and i was very impressed! while the service center was focused on the large engines (and are they large!) they had a technician that knew the rv generators inside and out!

let us know what it turned out to be as there are some other posts about generators stopping while in travel.

since we have a 5th wheel we do not travel with the generator on so i haven't had the 'pleasure' of experiencing this problem. also our generator is the propane model and i haven't had the 'pleasure' of all the issues with fuel pumps and filters.

The problem may be that the oil level is too full. Below is a video showing what may like you are experiencing.

I spoke with an onan rep a couple of years ago who said they are air cooler from the bottom and when road temp is high and pull in heat from RV engine they can shut down due to over heating.

I always thought they sucked in air from side vent and discharged toward pavement..

The green Onan case on mine has vents on the side of it but the whole generator is in a compartment that only open on the bottom.
