Stromberg Carlson entry steps

I had a tech diagnose a step problem where it doesn't raise and lower smoothly. When it gets all the way up, it "clunks" several times before it finally "knows" that the steps are all the way up.

He made every mechanical adjustment to get everything aligned properly and made sure nothing was bent. The only thing left that could be wrong is the control module. At $160 for the part I told him to just "let it clunk".

So my question is this: Is that control module "maintainable"? or is it a completely sealed unit that can't be repaired anywhere outside of the factory? Would it be worthwhile for me to crawl under there and check loose connections, etc?

My tech is VERY savvy so I'd suspect there is little I can do except replace the entire module.

Boowho??
