Surge protectors

I need a portable 50 amp surge protector for a 2006 Georgetown 370xl.

The Technology Research (TRC) Surge Guard model 34850 and the Progressive Industries model EMS-PT50C are both in the $350 range. The Surge Guard has a 12 month warranty, and the Progressive has a life-time warranty (non-transferable to future owner).

Following is a site that gives a capabilities comparison on various surge protectors. Don't think this is a hot-link that can just "click and go to". You may have to key-in the link.

Would appreciate some comments from you more-knowledgeable members relative to capabilities/protection of the 2 above-mentioned models. Thanks.

Go with the Progressive. The Progressive is life time warranty. It has saved my unit a few times. Only once did I have to send it back to them after a problem. In a timely manner I got it back good as new at no cost to me except for mailing it to them. With the other unit you mentioned, it will cost you money in the long run. After the 12 month warranty runs out and you have a problem with it, you will be spending another $300 - $350 out of your pocket to get another one. Just my opinion.........

Progressive for sure. Mine has served me well. Several saves in first 2 years. Could have been catastrophic a couple times.

We use the Progressive mobile plug between the cord and box. Too much trouble installing the permanent unit. Just my choice.

If you look at the comparison chart in the link provided about, you can see several important areas where the Progressive unit offers protection that the Surge Guard does not.

There's only two things that the ems does, that the higher end surge guard does not.
Fluffy things.

The surge guard offers much higher spike protection though.

My Surge Guard (bought at Camping World cause I was there and so was it) has been quirky the later bit of last season. Now it only works if absolutely upright, I can't have it laying on the ground like I need to sometimes.

Don't have experience with the Progressive, but considering the stories on here and my own experience with the Surge Guard should have got the PI.

I bought my Progressive EMS 30 over seven years ago. 2nd trailer with it and we were seasonal at the beginning. Halfway done our our very first road trip we were setting up in the pouring rain. I was holding the unit parallel to the ground plug side up, yes not thinking. Water got into the holes and it fried when I plugged it in. When we got home I called Progressive, professed my stupidity and they said mail it to them and they will fix it. That was six years ago and no problems since. They were very nice on the phone and didn't make me feel like the idiot I was.

Keep in mind that the surge protection circuitry in these devices is sacrificial. They are destroyed in the process of protecting from a major surge. This means that once out of warranty you will need to buy a new one if they are called upon to do their job.

Thanks to all for the input on selecting a surge protector/guard. I'm going with the Progressive Industries because of life-time warranty, extra capabilities, and your input having used their products for years. They are closed now between Christmas and New Years, opening again on 1/4/16, with a 20% off year-end price that should still be honored.

I'm buying directly from Progressive. Closing the company for the year-end holidays may be a reflection of their successful customer service reputation you guys just relayed. Thanks again, and may 2016 be a fantastic year for you. BILL

I too am considering a surge protector and I am leaning to the Progressive based on all the data everyone has provided. I just have to decide to hard wire or portable. Is there any way to lock the portable so no one can easily steal it?

There's been several posts on this, with several different opinions. I for one don't bother locking mine, figuring the locks will attract the thieves. Others lock them up like Fort Knox.

But if you truly want peace of mind, go hardwired... As long as you're worried somebody might steal it, you'll always have a bit of that worry no matter how well you lock it. With the hardwired you'll know for a fact that's safe. Plus, you can never accidentally forget it.

The portable TRC Surge Guard requires an additional $23 to buy a separate lock to prevent theft.

To quote Progressive's Features of their portable surge protector: "It has a built-in lock bracket that allows owner to prevent theft by securing the unit to the power source pedestal using a lock, such as a bicycle cable lock". BILL

PS: the PI includes the lock bracket but not a lock.
