synthetic oil for onan generator
I've looked at past posts and there seems to be many being that recommend using synthetic oil in the generator. I have an onan 5500 lp generator and it's time to change the oil. based upon the temperatures where we live (below freezing to over 100) the recommendation is to use 15w-40 oil. so I tried to find a brand of synthetic oil in this viscosity. I couldn't find any. all the ones that are 15w-40 are for cj service (diesel engines). so my question is what are people using? (brand, viscosity, gas or diesel, and is what they are using the same as what is recommended?

I have used Castrol Edge full synthetic in 5W30 viscosity in my 2 Honda generators and my lawn mower for at least 6 years. My Hondas are 10 years old and still purr like new. My temp range is about the same as yours.

You should use only the oil recommended by the manufacturer.

Why? If the oil has the same specifications as the recommended I'd rather not support the manufacturers partner just because.

Shell TD6 available at Walmart. Used in a lot of diesel motors but also used in gas motors. I also use it in my Can Am ATV.

Looked at my jug of shell Rotella T6 and noticed it is 5/40 weight.

So does Schaeffers oil. Whatever you choose... make it one you can find anywhere cause you never know when you will need it. I also HIGHLY recommend it meets or exceeds OEM specs.

The rotella will work just fine . 15/40 or even 5 /40 is ok once the oil is warm the viscosity increases to the 40 wt . the 5 wt is good for flow when it's cold but won't make a difference if it's 90 out

Well, bbrown thought the op was asking for recommendations. I personally use Amsoil for everything, but know of people that have used Royal Purple for their gennys. I would have mentioned Amsoil but lot of people dont know where to get it.

Amsoil. Its on the web. Its WAY to easy to buy. I'm a dealer. Go online. Set up a personal account and buy. Amsoil is THE first synthetic oil. And, in my opinion, the best.

Is there a such thing as straight 30w syn.? Cummins Onen recommends 30w is best at temps similar to our summer temps.

I used Wal-Mart 10-30 synthetic in my last unit for 8 years/600 hours no issues.

I went to Cummins to buy oil for my Onan diesel generator 3200, in my MBS 2401R Forrester. I asked for synthetic but was told by the service and parts departments to only use regular oil. So I have only been using regular. I don't know why but the Cummins folks said that they would not recommend using synthetic in their generators. Got me?
