testing battery shutoff

I cannot get my awning to work so i started with the battery shut off switch. When i pull it from the wall it only has two battery cables going to it. When i test it in the off position i am getting 13.8 volts from ground to either wire?? Can some one explain or is it bad.

That happened in my trailer. The contacts did not open when the switch was in the "OFF" position. I pulled the pin, sprayed some WD-40 into the hole and tapped the switch body a few times with the butt end of a screwdriver. Now it works as it should.

For one thing, if you are measuring 13.8V, that means your converter is on so you will measure battery voltage on the load side of the switch. You are likely measuring 13.8V on the battery side of the switch since it has a surface charge. Disconnect shorepower, turn off the switch and measure again.

If you actually need to squirt wd-40 into a switch to make it work, time to buy a new switch.
