Since forever. Both equations are part of OHMS law. Buy a copy of UGLY'S Electrical References, OHM's Law formulas with examples on pages 1 thru 12, best handyman reference made. I know a lot of certified electricians carry a copy.

Yep, 1962 was the year the formula was drummed into my head. Guess E and V sound alike when spoken so no one ever questioned it; although it wouldn't be wrong. Oh well.

I have used both V and E interchangeably throughout my Electrical Engineering career and education. The physics and scientific side use E (electromotive force) because V is "velocity". Very similar to the way mathematicians use i for the square root of -1, while EEs use j to avoid confusion with current (i).
