WFCO Converter Problem

I have a 2005 Rockwood 2605 trailer with a WFCO 3 stage converter, model # 8955AN that I don't think is working properly. Until my recent trip when I was hooked to shore power I would notice the converter fan kick on when we put more than 3 lights on in the trailer, which I think is normal. Batteries remained charged, all other electrical systems were normal. This recent trip I hooked up to shore power I did not hear the converter fan go on at all and noticed my 12 volt lights dimming after some time. The 15 amp CB for the converter did not appear tripped but I tripped it and reset it anyway. When I reset the CB I noriced the converter fan ran for a brief time ( seconds ) and stopped again. When I connected and disconnected shore power I noticed the same symptom. My battery was 4 yrs old so I replaced it, but I still don't think the converter is working properly. Welcome to the forums.

My first step would be to use a multimeter and test the voltage output of the converter. While plugged in, test the voltage on the battery terminals, it should be between 13.2 and 13.6 volts and can be up to 14.4 volts if the converter is charging in the "equalization" mode.

Are you absolutely positive that you connected the pos and neg terminals to their proper colored wires? This causes converter/battery issues, and is a fairly common problem. Randy

Yep, battery is hooked up correctly.

I had 12.5 vts on the battery without shore power and 14 vts with. So it looks like at least what I would call a trickle charge is being supplied by the converter. The converter fan coming on at odd times ( when no lights, fridge or W/H are on ) and the fan rpm's varying up and down, still concern me. Thanks again, Bob

Bob, try calling Best Converters and talk to them. Very knowledgable about these things. You can find them with a Google serch online. I believe they are in Boise Idaho.

This sounds like it could be a bad ground. I would look for a corroded ground connection since all 12DV uses the frame as a common ground.

I have a WFCO converter in my Cat. It dose the same thing, but never trip a breaker. I put it on it's own breaker. It was on the general 15 amp circuit. The fan come & off for short times too. It must have a temp control for the fan.
