What Battery Size Will Fit in an OEM 5th Wheel Battery Box

The dealer installed a basic Group 24 battery in the battery box of my Rockwood 5er. Although we've always camped on an electric site, I'd like to replace it with something that's better quality and more Amp-Hours in case the power goes out (had that happen) or we actually try dry camping/boondocking.

So I'm wondering what size of battery will fit in the standard 5er battery box. Would a BCI Group 31 fit? How about a Trojan T-1275 (13"L x 7.13"W x 11.13"H) or a Trojan SCS200 (12.8"L x 6.73"W x 9.8"H)?

A Group 24 box will only fit a Group 24 or Group 24F.
A GC2 6v golf cart battery will fit but is slightly taller.

If the battery you want doesn't fit, get a new battery box. If it's a recessed box, cutting the material around it to fit a bigger box is not usually that big a deal. There's always a way.

Here's a picture of one something like mine.

I found the Lavanture Products MA102BS battery box on Amazon that looks very similar. Their catalog says its 12.75" long, no measurement for the height.

Mine is definitely larger than the Group 24 battery I'm using but I don't know if a Group 31 would fit.

It's a pain to open if you use 6 screws like the dealer did so it might be worth looking at something to replace it that's more convenient to open and check the water levels. I'll see if a standard battery box strap will be long enough.

I don't think the typical cheap vented Camco battery box (like you put on the front of a TT) would be appropriate in the compartment. Battery boxes like Century Plastics and NOCO's commercial series are a bit pricey to ship up here to Canada. I'll see if I can find a Canadian source. Otherwise, I may have to get inventive with a heavy duty storage box.

Lots of inventive people out there who made custom battery boxes out of everything from two kitchen dish tubs to paper totes.

Itat, I just went and measured mine which looks exactly like your picture above. The inside measurements are 12½" long x 7" wide x 10" tall. A Group 31 is too long. The Trojan SCS200 would be close but it appears a little too long. Looks like the biggest you can fit comfortably is a group 27. They make larger vented battery boxes, so you might find one that will work.
