2019 Rockwood 8299BS Trailer brakes

I have an odd situation here. We bought a Rockwood signature series 8299BS from a couple whose home was burned in last years fires here in Northern California. The trailer was delivered to their property and had not been moved since. After 18 months of sitting in one place We hooked it up and took it home. I soon realized the trailer brakes were not working. The dealer replaced the Torflex axles before they delivered it 18 months ago. My question is is there a fuse or breaker for the trailer brakes and where is it located? It is out of warranty but do you think the dealer should fix the problem under warranty? Thanks

What brake controller are you using?

I think I would crawl under it an make sure the wire connections to the brakes are actually connected and tight. they did axle work may have not attached the wires.

This is quite possible. I had an axle replaced at a local shop and the technician forgot to hook up the brakes on that axle. The service center sent that technician to my house to connect that axle's brake wires!

If you are not comfortable looking for things like disconnected wiring or pulling wheels to check components, then you are going to have to find someone to do that for you.

I'll ask again... do you have a brake controller in your vehicle?
Is it connected properly and has power?
Do you know how to adjust the controller and make 'gain' settings for the size R/V you are pulling?
Did you ever do a brake check by pulling the breakaway switch?
These are all things you should have done before ever towing.

As for the dealer fixing it under warranty... likely not.
There are reports here daily of folks not being able to get their dealers to repair something on brand new units they just bought. It would take a special dealer to repair a unit that was purchased used from an individual and do it under warranty.

Do you have any idea why the axles were replaced on the unit before delivery to the folks you bought it from?

I think I’ll take my multi-tester and check all the connections. Thanks.

I had an independent shop test the truck and it’s not the truck so it has to be in the trailer wiring... Thanks.

To answer the other question there is no fuse or breaker for the trailer brakes on the trailer. The TV would have the fuse for that and since you tested the TV looks like its fine.

Good luck with a dealer fixing it as a third party. You will have trouble getting them to fix it right if you paid them to do it. You are better off with your volt meter or a mobile RV tech.

Let us know what you find if you have more trouble. I suspect disconnected wires or grease on the brakes depending on if you have ANY braking or some.

Happy hunting!

We also have a 2019 8299BS. Congrats, it’s a great RV and you should have good travels with it.

Having said that, the brake wiring looks pretty feeble to me. On our trailer, the wiring runs down the driver’s side to those brakes first. It is pretty small gauge and is just crimped from the main line to the brakes. It looks tight to me, and has no protection for the wires, something I have to correct. It’s jumped to the passenger side and carried through one of the axles to get to the passenger side. If the axles were replaced, they might very well have forgotten to hook up the brake lines at all. Or, might have missed carrying the line over to the other side through the axle.

GL, crawl under and look around first. The RV really is good to live in - we were in ours in FL all winter - and once you get it straightened out, you’ll like it. It is a little disturbing that the axles were replaced, but hopefully that is behind you now.

Finally, I found that my 2019 F350 has Low, Med, and High settings for output of the brake controller. I drove a few days with it in Low and wondered why the brakes were so feeble. High made a big difference! Something else to check when you get the wiring straightened out.

Go to the 7 pin trailer connector and measure ohms from brake contact to ground. Should be around 1 ohm.

Easy way to check the brakes. Plug the trailer into the truck. Get a Boy Scout compass and have someone start the truck, hold the brakes on. You take the compass to each wheel of the trailer. IF they are wired and working, the needle will react. Check each wheel. If the needle does not react, no power to that wheel. Start wire tracking.

You never answered Bikendan's question. What controller are you using? Most will tell you if you are connected to at least one magnet or if it thinks you are disconnected.

He does not seem to want to answer that question, does he?

Perhaps he has NO idea what that is.
