Brakes sticking?
Hey everyone, took the travel trailer out to the beach for some camping this weekend, the tow home seemed to go well until i pulled off the freeway to our exit to get home. I noticed that the brakes on the trailer would seem to grab and then disengage rather violently at the traffic light whenever the brakes were applied, it seems that they’re sticking. When driving thru the neighborhood and applying the brakes at low speed they grab, and then release but it feels and sounds like they’re sticking. Any thoughts?

GOod point, but nothing has changed since the last camping trip. I did try turning it way down to see if it had an affect and it did NOT.

Take the hubs off and inspect. Only way you are truly doing to find out what is going on.

It's a 2022 and only had 2 camping trips on it, I hope there isn't something wrong with the hubs already.

Yup, sounds like grease on the shoes.

The feeling is very hard to describe, when actuating my tow vehicle brakes, i can feel the trailer grab, then when removing my foot from the brake the trailer brakes stay engaged and then release rather harshly......anyone know of any good tutorials on taking off the hubs, or should i just take it into the service department because i'm guessing this should be a warranty issue.

Brake shoes may need to burnished in with the hubs if it has not been towed much.

We have only taken it on two camping trips, and the first one the trailer worked flawlessly. Didn't have an issue until pulling off the highway and noticed a difference at the stop light.

If you're not at all familiar with the hubs/brakes, your best bet is take it in for warranty work.

Drum brakes are a PITA
inspection and adjustments best left to someone who knows how.
It's under warranty... take it to the dealer for testing

Make sure the unit plugged into tow vehicle connection is snug and can't move around, especially when stopping.
Also, if the app has a "Boost or Sensitivity" setting, make sure it matches the size of your trailer. On many of the hard wired controllers the lowest setting (other than off) is for lighter weight trailers, second setting for heavier 5th wheel trailers, and highest setting is for more than two axles and HEAVY trailers. Again, this is the boost or sensitivity setting, not "Gain" which controls the amount of braking action itself.
I know that my trailer behaves exactly like you describe at low speeds when I have the Boost setting higher than just the first level. I have a hard wired Prodigy P3 and this is controlled by a button that every once in a while gets hit, setting the boost to the next highest setting.

My trailers will do that when the gain is too high but I also have a different controller. It is possible your brake shoes have seated and are now braking better. On my farm trailer (same brake design), I adjusted the gain to not lock up. After several stops on a trip, they began locking up. It was a big difference after they wore in a little.

Some great points in here, how would i know if the brakes have seated? I will hook up to it and turn the gain down substantially and give that a try, I’ve just never heard of the brakes all of a sudden seating but you may have a good point there.

I seriously doubt unburnished brakes is your problem. Those brakes should have been well burnished from the trip from the factory to the dealership. The fact that they worked fine, then all of a sudden started to violently grab indicates another problem.

That’s a very good point. I did not think about it making a road trip to the dealer.
