castle rock tire, does this look bad?

Trailer is 2019, but only used last year (bought it used, have no idea how much it was towed).

This is the only tire in this condition, the other 3 and spare look really good. I'm new to rv'ing in general, my gut feeling is to replace all 5 before driving any where on a trip, any thoughts?

Your trailer might be a 2019 but that tire was manufactured in 2017. I replace my trailer tires every four years.

Junk those tires. They will cause you a lot of heart ache.

That tire was made in early December of 2017, so it is almost 3 years old. Seeing the cracking, I would definitely replace that tire.

Being that Castle Rock is probably one of the most notorious of the China Bomb brands, at least on this forum, if you tow your camper more than 15 minutes from home, you might consider replacing all of your tires.

Ultimately, it is up to you. Some people have no issues with the OEM tires, others have no luck.

Smart move. I had a blowout on my castlerock and the other tire on the same side took the load and went from fine to looking like that afterwards I limped on the spare to the nearest open tire shop amd got new ones.

I hope you went up a load range while you were getting new tires...if not next time.

Those have served me very well on my cargo trailer. Really like them.

You made a wise choice to ditch the castle rocks.

Good deal. If you can, take a look at the castle rocks after theyre dismounted. See if either one is oval instead of round and if the tread is rounded from side to side in stead of flat across. Both are signs of bombs with lit fuses.

I didn't, no, these are 8 ply with a max of 2040 pounds.

My trailer has a UVW of 3836, and I just learned today it has a GVW of 3836 + 3685 = 7521 pounds. So the trailer maxes out 500 pounds before the tires do since I have dual axles.

It's probably wise to up the load range next time, might do that, just figured there is no way I can possibly load 3600 pounds of cargo in that trailer, I just don't have that much stuff also considering that my truck has 1750 pounds of payload (minus tongue weight).

So I should be good!

And don't forget, the tires don't carry all of the trailer weight as the hitch carries part of the weight. So you have more cushion than you think. I have the Carlisles on my fifth wheel. I'm very happy with them.

I’m glad to see this thread. Camping World put Carlisles on my travel trailer when i bought it used a year ago. I didn’t even think to ask what they were putting on. I’ve kinda been afraid to ask here what y’all think of them. I feel much better now.

Replace it!!! It will blow out and cause damage! Mine looked like that and one blew while on the interstate during rush hour. Get yourself a nice set of “E” rated tires!

When we bought our first trailer last year it came with Castle Rock tires. I read up all of the reviews on this forum to just replace them. I took the chance and tried to use them for a year. I was great about checking the tire pressure each morning and then to only drive 2-3 hours a day. Even so, they were terrible and finally gave out in Palm Springs. We went with the Goodyears and wow what a difference. I would like to say that I was shocked with the difference, but I knew better. I just read too many post like this. Get some good tires and still keep an eye on the pressure before you drive. With cracking like that, it also says that they have been out in the sun. We keep covers on all of our trailer tires to keep the UV off of them and it makes a big difference.

If the tire was a Goodyear, Carlisle or Maxxum would the answer still be the same?

Absolutely. Once a tire starts to open up it will continue down below the tread and then separate.

Any tire with weather checking should be replaced. Those separations could also be caused by driving with low air pressure or by hitting a curb. Any sidewall damage means it is time to get a new tire, or set of tires.

We just got our new/used RV and the tire date was 1213 so on the way back home with the RV I went right to the tire dealer and got 4 new commercial grade tires.

Replace the old tires and get the best tire you can find it will be cheeper then repairing the trailer after a blowout.
