Castle Rock tires

Starting year 4 on the factory Castle Rock tires on my 1020 Surveyor RBLE 19. Trailer is stored inside for 6 months a year. Tires came with a 5 year warranty. Probably only a few thousand miles total. Replace this year?

Castle Rock tires have a very bad reputation for blowouts. If you are going to keep running on them, make sure to do a feel test for abnormalities every stop you make and hopefully you are using a TPMS?

Laying in the gravel on the side of the Ohio Turnpike changing a blown (not merely flat) tire made me realize I probably should have replaced old tires before starting a 500 mile trip.

Your mileage may vary...

Ours had about 20K on them after 4 years of use. Looked fine on the spring inspection a couple year back. Date code indicated they were a little over 5 yrs old. Decided they were good for one more trip. Final checkout the week we were to leave the sidewalls had all become cracked so I had to rush around for replacement. The were stored outdoors (covered). I've not had issues with OEM tire, yet.

I have received, mounted and installed the Goodyear Endurance tires. Now I need to know what pressure. The Castle Rocks were 65 psi but the Goodyears can go higher than that. Any thoughts?

Run the pressure on the data plate on the side of your trailer which is probably 65psi. If you try to run these over spec (LR-E vs LR-D) tires at 80psi you'll beat the trailer to bits.

Inspect your tires!

Just wanted to share my experience with ST235/80R16E Castle Rock tires. Came OEM on a 2021 XLR Boost 37TSX13. 5W has about 6K miles on it.

One month ago I went to check on my 5W in storage and found the front passenger tire had blown out. RV was still under some warranty coverage, contacted Lion Head and they said it was not covered. This is their response:

“When there are wires sticking out of a tire like this, it’s not a manufacturer’s defect. Having “wild wires” coming out of the tread like this is caused by the tire being over loaded, leading to over-deflection of the tire. As a result, this type of damage is not covered under our warranty.”

I politely responded and asked if there was anything they could do. I’m always careful not to overload the 5W GWT and truck’s CGWT (much to the Mrs. dismay). IE: never hauled with holding tanks full, no “toys” in the garage. They said they still couldn’t help me out.

Yesterday I went to do a monthly inspection and run the generator (HF inverter generator) at the camper. Upon inspection I found the front driver side tire had rubber coming off the tread and the belts were warped.

I removed the tire, put it in the bed of my truck and went home. While home, the tire blew out in the bed of my truck. Luckily no one was hurt and no damage to the truck.

Currently I’m in the market for new tires; looking at Sailun and Trailer King G load rated tires.

Be safe, check your tires, and happy camping!!

The Goodyear endurance are a heavier built tire compared to the CastleRocks.
I initially ran mine at 65psi but the TT seemed to bounce more on rough roads. So I went more by the Goodyear chart. I’m running mine at 55 psi, still more load capacity and smoother ride. Tires are half of your TT RV suspension system, springs the other. Normally NO shock absorbers. So the harder you make the tires, the harder road impacts are on the TT and its contents.
Figure your TT weight, add 10% or so for added weight and side to side tolerances, and use that PSI off the chart.

Just changed oy my Castle Rocks.'s a month ago. But they were 6 years old with approximately 25,000 miles on them. Had them pumped up to 50 psi and checked them before every trip. Never had a problem with them. Changed them out for Carlisle Radial Trail HD Trailer Tire - ST205/75R14 LRD 8PLY Rated. We'll see how they go.

Castle Rock Tires

Our 2020 Rockwood 5th wheel came with Castle Rock 10 ply tires. The trailer was 22 months old and had approximately 6000 miles on it when the entire tire casing came off one tire at 65 mph, the TPMS alerted once the casing was gone. There was no road hazard involved, trailer is stored indoors in heated area all winter, tires covered when the trailer is outside, pressure always properly maintained. I have weighed both the truck and trailer and the tires were not overloaded. In fact it was the passenger side tire that came apart and there is no slide out or heavy appliances above those tires. Insurance covered the damage to the trailer. I took good pictures of all the tires and filed a claim with Lions Head and a local tire shop owner inspected all the tires and added his findings on my email to Lions Head. They pro-rated me $100 for each tire which went toward the purchase of new Goodyear Endurance tires. I have been towing some form of trailer for almost 30 years and that was my first catastrophic tire failure. I have also had very good service from Maxxis and Carlisle tires.
