Check those tire pressures!

So it's spingtime, and you wanna get that dewinterization done and get ready to go. Most of us old fogies know the importance of making sure the tires on our rigs are properly inflated before we try to raise our stabilizers. Some folks don't, and it cost them time and money. I only say this because it happened to my neighbor this week. Over the winter his trailer tires leaked down on him, but not enough to be noticeable. However, it was enough to put pressure on his stabilizer jacks. The motor wouldn't raise the jacks, so he got out the ole crank handle, and ...well let's suffice it to say he broke it. Fortunately there is a Camping World nearby, and just by chance they had the parts he needed in stock. All I can tell you is he paid more than he should have.

Before we did anything else, I fired up my portable air compressor and inflated his tires to the proper level. The entire trailer rose about an inch overall. The other stabilizer went up like nothing happened at all. Now, I realize not everyone stores their rigs with stabiizers down. I do because sometimes I have guests and I put them up in the trailer. I am basically writing this thread for newbies because this is not something that is in their heads already. It's just one of those things on a list that you never made because nobody told you or you didn't think of it. I think it's a pretty important thing to remember.

So, unless you want your neighbor or your brother-in-law to stand there and watch, all the while chuckling at your delemma and all the money you just forked over, check them tires!

Nice reminder RockDodger!
I too keep the stabilizers down on our trailer. Mainly because we're in and out of it soo often even off season, that it's habit now. We also get a LOT of wind here in NE Kansas, and I feel more comfortable having the trailer be as stable as possible while not being towed.

Good point about tire pressure. As for the stabilizers, I put them down a couple winters ago after not doing it for the two winters prior. Found the floor lino cracked in a few spots and even the left side fender was cracked when I went out to the camper after winter.

Absolutely something those living in winter freezing conditions need to consider.

Freezing conditions will heave the ground as much as six+ inches depending on moisture content. It will bust concrete so it can for sure, create havoc on stabilizers and the R/V.

Yep...It already had one decent crack in it when we bought it, it's old enough the lino is getting brittle anyway but that just seemed to expedite the process.

Never considered the potential of ground upheaval with regard to stabilizers. I always kept them up mostly for critters. Not that there is a critter problem, but I just figure why add more places for them to climb than what already exists. There is some great info in here. Thanks all for contributing your knowledge.

Correct, and we missed camping all of last year so the RV has been in the garage for a long time.
