General Tires vs. Goodyear

I have to replace the original Uniroyal Larado LT 225/75 R16 E tires on my 2013 Sunseeker 2250 SLE on a chevy express van 4500 chassis. The sidewalls are cracked. I was misinformed about the age of the tires when I bought this guy last August. They have a date code of 4411 which makes them much older than what I was told. The above was posted in another thread.

Based on price I have narrowed my tire brands to General or Goodyear.

The shop that can install the Generals is only a few miles from home and also offers the lowest price vs. another brand made in the USA. I found one Goodyear truck tire shop that is about $100 more costly in price and not too far away.

My first question is, does anyone have experience with General Tires and what is that experience?

My second question is the same but for Goodyear Wrangler HT tires.

Thanks,

Bobby

I never had much luck with General. Hard to balance and out of round. I never had much luck with Goodyear either. Wore out fast. For my money I would get Cooper, B.F. Goodrich, Firestone or Michelin. Cheapest isn't always best with tires..

My experience has been it depends more on the tire itself vs. the actual manufacturer.

I can say I have never had a bad Cooper, but have only used STTs and AT/3 tires. BF Goodrich KMs are terrible, while their AT is good. Goodyear SRA are one of the worse tires I have ever had for traction, but the Wrangler Kevlar has so far, been great.

So, I have always researched a particular tire brand and a good place to start is Tire Rack and read the customer reviews.

As for General. Years ago I installed a set of Generals on a car and the were great tires up until the car went away. But that was yeas ago....

I had Generals on my 2004 coachman 25 ft MH, They were on for 10 years and still looked to in great condition, No side wall issues. Decided to change them as we were making the alaska trip went with Firestones, The Firestones have been great tires, 22,000 miles on them and never any problems. I now have a new 2014 sunseeker that also has Firestones on it, 15,000 miles and still running great. It originall had Michelins on it that were recalled but there were no replacment Michelins available so Michelin said they would pay for the Firestones.

I have used Coopers on all our SUV's and Trucks. My Jeep had BFG MT and GY Wrangler MT, all worked well. My father's 4x4 f550 have General MT tires and they are monsters on the road.. And off. Depending on your driving habits I would bet they will max out on age before they wear out.

Have the BFG All Terrain T/A's on my TV; great tires, good traction, quiet & after about 2 years show very little wear. Understand they are made by Michelin. A little pricey, but very pleased. Tried other brands & they were OK, but do not compare the BFG's. Have to remind myself sometimes, you get what you pay for.

General tires came as OEM on my Ford F350 dually. Got about 37,000 miles on the front and about 70,000 on the rears. Getting ready to replace the fronts again. Getting prices tomorrow on Generals and Michelins...just to compare.

tires

I have had pop up campers, truck campers, motor homes, and 5th wheels over the last 40 years. I've got so if the vehicle don't have Goodyear, I don't drive around the block.

Nothing wrong with Generals....they are owned by Continental and mostly made here but some originate in Brazil & Mexico. I would not hesitate to get a pair that meet your needs and would put them on a par with Goodyear.

I have Michelin LT285/75R16 LTX MS2 tires on my E350 Diesel Van. Use the van mostly for towing, and have run them over 45,000 miles over over 4 years. The have been fantastic tires - wear even, stay balance, and ride quietly. They still have like 20% tread on them, but I am going to change them out tomorrow for a set of the same thing, because we are headed south for the rest of the winter, and will put another 4-5000 miles on. A kid up the street will give me $100 for the old set. Ford dealers have a special going that they will match any competitive written price, and they rotate and check the balance on them for free every time I go in for an oil change.

I have a price of $1,236 installed, etc on six Generals from a close by RV lot. Not a new RV dealer.

I have been shopping around but became concerned that a lot of places don't usually service motorhomes which may lead to unintentional damage underneath my rig if they have to jack it up. I rather go to a place that has a lift strong enough for a motorhome.

I've run only Michelin and Goodyear on my 2500HD Diesel and never had a problem with either brand. The last set of Michelin went 70,100 and change before I replaced them. Looked like another 5,000 miles before touching the wear bars. Just put 4 new Goodyears on due to a sale my tire guy had going. I'm good with either brand IMHO.

At one time I bought GoodYears. All my vehicles had them. I finally learned better when a new car came with another brand. that taught me. GoodYears just do NOT last. All you get for more money is a name. My last TT came with Goodyear Marathons. Less than 4 years, One of them exploded and scattered it self all over the road. so no. You will NOT see a Goodyear tire on any thing I own ever again.
On the other hand General makes a good tire.

I have a 2014 Sunseeker Model 2250SLEC. It came standard with General tires. I've owned it since May of 2013 and have had no problems with the tires since I bought it. There are no cracks in the sidewalls and they look as good as new. Last year I bought another General Tire as my spare, since the 2250LE doesn't come with a spare. I put the spare on a Curt tire holder and attached it to the hitch in the back, since I don't tow any vehicles. I admit I haven't put that many miles on the RV since we usually camp at a local State Park during the summer.

I ordered General Tires through the RV shop near my home. The Michelins were not that much more but the shop guy said he sees more sidewall cracking on the Michelins.

This place has hundreds of RVs on their property in all states of repair and disrepair. There is a tree growing through one of them. My point is that they have decades of experience and I hope that I can use them for my service needs. This will be a good test.

I don't want to go back to the place where I bought this rig which is about 20+ minutes away. The used shop is only 5 minutes away. It looks like a junk yard but they have a good reputation locally.

Thanks for all of the good responses,

Bobby

I like the lines of it and the height is good for all of the low clearances in this part of the world.
