Jacking trailer completely off the ground

2016 Primetime Avenger 28DBS

I am buying tires soon and I want to bring all 5 wheels (spare included) to Walmart to have the new tires installed. I’m assuming I will just Jack the trailer at the axles and use Jack stands as far outboard as possible on the axle to support the trailer and then lower the tongue and stabilizer jacks just to keep it stable.

Is this the proper way to do this? Or should I put the Jack stands under the frame in the 4 corners of the trailer?

Thanks in Advance

Do NOT lift the trailer at the corners. You'll bend the frame. Stabilizers jacks are just that - stabilizers. They're not meant for lifting.

Wherever or not it's advisable to lift it off all tires with jackstands at the axles, I cannot say. If you have the owner's documentation, the frame manufacturer doco probably contains the answer, or their customer support line does.

I supported mine just past the spring shackles since that takes all the weight as you bounce down the highway. I used concrete masonry blocks, bricklayers use them to build our children's schools so no worries they could carry the load.

might be a stupid question, but why not tow the trailer to wal mart? you get charged the same mounting fees on a vehicle or off...

I have seen many threads that Walmart refuses to do this on trailers. The wheels have to be brought in for them to change out the tires.

When I take mine in I take two in , have em mounted , reinstall , take the other two in . I do not jack the trailer , I run up on ramps , remove two tires , then do it again . I have seen frames twisted by wrong placement of jacks and blocks .

Thanks all

I bought the RV new and have all the paperwork so I take look there. If I don’t find anything helpful I think I’ll do like Mike134 did with his.

It’s cheaper to bring the wheels to Walmart and I’d prefer to do it in 1 shot but if it gets too sketchy, I’ll try the ramp method and take 2 at a time.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

You're correct, they will not touch the trailer or tires. You'll have to dismount the tires and bring them in to be changed out. I just did this with my 5'er a couple weeks ago, one tire at a time.

Also, if you plan to bring all five tires in to Walmart, call them for an appointment, otherwise they'll only take 'em and change 'em one at a time. This maybe something they're doing at select Walmart's, but they initially told me I needed an appointment for anything more than one tire replacement.

The mounting and balancing ran just under $13 per tire.

I used Trailer-Aide Plus to get the wheels up off the pavement. The Plus model gives you an extra inch of lift over the standard Trailer-Aide. You can get them from Amazon for about $48.

Interesting my tire store just went up to $10 a tire and still beat Walmart prices on tires.

I’m going to go to the Walmart I want to use and order the GY Endurance tires from them and make the appointment to have them do the swap. So hopefully it will all get hammer out right there.

You will have to order the tires online. They don't carry them in their stores. I found out later that if you CALL Goodyear about the Endurance tires, they will offer you a 15 percent discount on the purchase, which is less than what you'll pay at Walmart. Goodyear will give you a list of dealers in your area that can dismount and remount your new tires. Some of the dealers also offer a mobile tire service where they come to you. I would've done this had I known earlier.

I would try to watch the process as they may not be aware of the proper way to jack a trailer for tire replacement. If you can not I would have them add a note to the work order.

Walmart will not touch your trailer to dismount the tires, its up to you to do it. They won't do this for liability reasons and I wouldn't want them to do it anyways exactly for the reason you stated above.

I put my jack stands just beyond the spring hangers when I work on the suspension.

If you have torsion axles don't jack or support by the axle tube.

Also I may be paranoid but I do not do this with the tongue jack supporting the front. I use wood cribbing under the tongue.

I've done mine 2 at a time. I jacked up one side, had the tires changed, re installed them then repeated on the other side.
