Maxxis 8008 vs Rib vs G614 ?

Has anyone had problems with the Maxxis 8008 in 235/80R16 size? I'm still waffling between this tire, Michelin Rib, or the G614's.

1. The 8008's are the least expensive option at $160 each plus mount and balance.
2. The Ribs are about $260 each plus mount and balance.
3. The G614's are $300 each plus mount and balance. (plus $450 for wheels)

So;
1. would run $740 and back on the road.
2. would be $1140
3. would be $1700 which includes new wheels. Guessing I can recover a couple hundred $ by selling the old wheels and tires, so $1500 total out of pocket.

So, for now, I'm going turkey hunting for a week or two and give it some thought. If I thought the Maxxis tires were reliable, I'd do that and save some $...maybe buy a tpms system like Herk suggested. So, I could do option 1 and be at or under a grand.
Opinions?

The XPS Rib is a very durable tire but the bottom line is it’s maximum load capacity is still just 3042# @ 80 PSI. A loss of just a few PSI below 80 and the tire is under your axles minimum requirement. Here are a couple of Michelin references to ponder. In the first one click on the tab “tire replacement” and then click on the question “do I have to replace my tires with the same size tires?” In the second read “what is not covered” starting on page #2.

http://www.michelinman.com/US/en/help/faq.html#1393412908155
http://media.michelinman.com/content/dam/master/Michelin/pdf/Owners_Manual_Post_Promise_Plan.pdf

Because FR does not offer any tire options on your model, using tires other than what is depicted on the tire placard and in your owner’s manual could void portions of the trailer warranty. So you should ask them about that and for optional tire recommendations (different brand names in the same size are not considered options). Unless specified differently in your owner’s manual all ST235/80R16E tires revert to the lowest maximum load capacity (3420#).

I would like to go ahead and get the G614's, but I am unable to find an aluminum wheel in 16 x 6.5" 6 lug that allows for 100 psi. They are all restricted to 80 psig. Etrailer has one that comes close with a higher load rating of 3580, but it too is restricted to 80 psi.
As to the Ribs, there are many trailers much heavier than mine running that exact same tire very successfully,...but there's still that nagging little fact of the tires load rating of 3042.
So,..... That narrows it down to buying steel rims with the G614's or buying the Maxxis. ugh..

I have run Maxxis 235x80x16 on my 14K Heartland for several years with good luck. That said you can have bad experience with any brand. All three that you mention are top quality. Important thing as all have said is maintaining pressure and running a TPMS. That's about the best we can do. Also, if possible is to weight each wheel to see where most of your load is and shift if necessary to not overload. Other than that it's pretty much a crap shoot.

I wouldn't want 6,084 lbs. of carrying capacity on a 6,000 lbs. axle.

IMO, the G614 is overkill (ironic coming from me, I know) but more importantly- you can't find a wheel/rim that works for you.

The Maxxis m8008 carried me just fine for a long time. It wasn't until I got into a maxed out situation did one start to have issues (broken belt and eventual flat; the flat was because I was dumb and didn't put on my spare when I knew I had a problem).

In my searches as I looked for new tires, I found very few negative comments on the Maxxis m8008 line and was comfortable with my tire selection.

Thanks to everyone. Great advice all the way around. When I return from my turkey hunt, I plan on ordering the Maxxis, and take Herc's advice and buy a tpms. That can be done for at or slightly less than a grand, whereas the G614's and iffy rims would be $1800-$1900. I have 4ea 8008's in my Amazon cart at $636 now. The only other potential issue is that there is not a Maxxis dealer in my area, so if I have an issue, it will be mine to bear. Driving 175 miles to a dealer that didn't originally sell me the tires would be a gamble and expense that would probably exceed any adjustment they offered. But, such is life right?

Any LT tire will be better than the best ST tire as long as their load rating is sufficient for your trailer. Michelin RIBs are not the only LT Michelin makes. I have LTXM/S2s that have been on for nearly five years that have performed perfectly. Lots of people swear by Firestone Duval, another steel belted tire.

You probably already know this but be sure to get fresh tires with a recent date stamp on the tire. If you don't call it out to them it's easy to get stuck with tires that are already a year or more old.

Yep, I am aware of that, but thanks for mentioning it. Ya never know who is following a thread that may not know that.

Your local tire dealer can get the Maxxis tires. They just have to put in the order and they show up the next day. My dealer does not sell them but can easily get them.

Maxis 8008

I got a set last summer after a blow out and could not be happier. They tow so smooth and quiet. I have also noticed that I don't have any sidewall rubbing on the inside of the wheel liners like I had with the stock bias plys that came new on the TT.

I see this Onlinetires.com indicates the Maxxis M8008 now has a speed rating Q = up to 99 mph.

The price at onlinetires is really great. Might order a spare tire at that price.

A prudent idea to be sure.

After adding freight, the cost is slightly more than discounttiredirect. They ship free 😝 , and they offer a 3 year warranty....for an additional $20...

I bought a set of maxxis 8008's last September and put 900-1000 miles on them last fall with no problems. I went from LR D to E and noticed a better ride-less sway.

That story fits a large group of people on this forum. Great tire choice.
