Metal Valve Stems ?

Stopped in at Discount Tire the other day to inquire about ordering new Goodyear Endurance Tires for my TT and asked them about installing metal valve stems when I get them installed for my TPMS they said they would install but I would have to supply them as they don't carry them...

So my question is what do I need to look for/get ? My wheels are 14" I understand there are different sizes. Any help would be appreciated.

That’s strange. They installed them for me and they had them in stock.

Yeah I called and confirmed they don't carry them and was told some locations do.

That is weird. When I had my Goodyear Endurance Tires installed at Discount Tire in West Des Moines, I wasn't smart enough to ask for metal valve stems. To my (pleasant) surprise, they did get installed.

yes - if someone hasn't already answered

make sure they are long enough to get the sensors off is all I have read in other forums

https://tsttruck.com/media/productsu...anual-RevB.pdf

SENSOR INSTALLATION - FLOW-THROUGH SENSOR Note: We recommend these sensors only be used on metal valve stems.

I had my toy hauler with the original removable sensors installed on metal stems as well as the new system.

Did they at least want to order them for you?
If not, I would go to another Discount Tire store.
This should be a no-brainer for them to get the stems for you.

I used those also. Had to have these with the nuts on the inside so they would fit in the rim recess . A drop of lock tight Green wouldn't hurt.

That's what I had to use also because of the wheels.

That was the type I used also. I installed them before changing to Maxxis.

I had my tire replaced last year and my Discount Tire didn't carry them either. I brought my own and they installed them for me. No big deal.

Are you positive they are what is being referred to as "metal valve stems" which in professional terminology is a clamp-in valve stem.

The reason I ask, is that this stem very often times gets confused with a TR-600 High Pressure "snap in" valve stem. People will mistakingly call the TR-600HP a metal valve stem when it is not because of the longer exposed brass barrel. If you have tires that run over 60-65 psi, then it requires a higher pressure stem, which most tire dealers will use the TR-600 HP.....and not an actual metal valve stem (clamp-in stem).

These TR600HP stems pictured below are not true metal stems in the sense, as some people are mistakingly referring to them as. They are snap-in rubber stems in reality.

Here is a tire trade journal article on such:

https://www.tirereview.com/make-the-...y-as-it-seems/

The easy laymans way to determine if you have snap-in stem vs a clamp-in metal stem is to just grab the end of the stem with your fingers and try to wiggle it side to side. If you can move it, then it's a snap-in rubber stem.

The reason for heavier truck type valve stems is for higher pressures. The stems you show above are fine for pressures up to 80 psi, but if you use TPMS sensors on them they can crack from flexing. (Voice of experience). Metal stems are needed for TPMS sensors to prevent the valve stem from flexing and ultimately cracking. Otherwise, if pressure is the only issue, use the ones you show above.

I had an experience with a rubber valve stem failing with a TPMS on the valve stem. The valve failed on the right rear tire of our truck. Fortunately the Tire Minder system worked and we were able to safely pull over and get it fixed

Confused. One link above suggested a valve stem for 0.453 hole size, the other to a 0.625 hole size.

I have a 2018 Rockwood 2606WS with 225R15/75 tires on factory rims. What size hole do I have so I can order some stems?

Find the manufacturer of your wheels. They should have the information you are looking for. A lot of forest river wheels are Lionhead.

Apparently lionshead, but no luck finding any info. Tried calling them, but no way to get past their 'automated' answering system.

Called Rockwood and 'they are looking into it'. Secret information -- probably only available if you work at Area 51.
