Herk.....when you pulled your axles, did you notice if any of the rubber in the ends looked like it was squeezing out....between axle end and spindle..? Haven't seen a new one for comparison to a used one.

Oh yea.

Will get more photos when I finish the install (tires have not come in yet) and do the post mortem on the axles.

I would think the wheel camber would need to be reset on a new set of axels. I think they do that by bending the axel housing some.

Had another question...was a heavier axle not an option....different bolt pattern or brakes? I take it 10" brakes are standard, just wondering if the backing plates and hubs are different on a 6000 axle.

Would have loved to, but to do a bolt up in my driveway I needed a direct replacement. Upgraded axles would need different mounts welded to the frame I was told.

I don't know how they would do that at the factory as they are just bolted as is to the frame and off the line they go.

Just found this thread as we are thinking of going up to 16" wheels on our Windjammer 3025 and am researching what others are doing. We are wondering if there is enough clearance in the wheel wells for the 16's.

On our '99 Airstream, we replaced our axles in the Spring of '11, upgraded the axles to 3500# each axles, for 16" wheels, and went up to 12" brakes, if I recall correctly, and they are 6-lug. We ordered our axles from Elkhart, and I drove there to pick them up to save money on shipping.

2X also go with Steel Valve Stems and "D" load rated, pulls so much better.

Not really true.

When I replaced my 3500 lb axles with 5200 lb axles on my Rockwood, I got the exact specs of the original axle from Al-Ko. I called Dexter with this information and they spec'd out a 5200 lb axle that only required two bolt holes to be re-drilled. Two of the mounting bolts fit the original holes.

BTW shipping charges for the two complete torsion axles with brakes from the Dexter plant in Fremont, IN to the Dayton Freight terminal in Mentor, Oh was $65.

Best mod i ever made on this trailer.

I would have done that if it was an option for me.
