Spotted this frame failure

We were walking around a campground recently and spotted this. I would be afraid to leave home with this failure. If it happened on the way to the campground, I would be afraid to tow it home. I wanted to chat with the owner, but never had the opportunity. Once that frame fails, I suspect the landing gear will be dragging on the road. (Hope the picture loads)

I'm thinking that is more of a slide crack than a frame failure. A fame failure would show the crack more at the corner where front drops down. You will also tend to see a gap at the cap. This is at least what I've witnessed. Slide corner cracks can occur for various reasons and usually start out small. If treated early, they can be repaired without any lasting effects. This one looks like it got out of control.

Looks like he has a goose neck adapter on the kingpin, that may have something to do with it.

A good fiberglass man can buff that right out.

If this happens on the road. Drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop it. Often the stress would be absorbed and no longer tear any further.

Saw one on a dealer's lot with similar cracks

The wife wanted to browse the trailers while I stopped in for some parts. I saw the same crack on the bottom right of the bedroom slide and another on the top right corner. The one on the top right corner extended straight up to roof. The one extending into the roof edging had been covered with Eternabond. The one on the lower right corner of slide had been sanded and caulked. I wish I had taken picture. The trailer looked much like the model in your pict. I would guess it might have been a 2007-2011 model.

Do cracks like that compromise the integrity of the wall? The wall strength is based on the laminate holding everything thing stiff. Obviously the wall is moving at that point. I have seen them put in "stress relief" strips down the stud to prevent that from getting larger. How many stress relief strips can be put into the wall before your wall is not strong enough?

My trailer has the beginning of a similar crack. There is a stress relief strip on the other end of that slide.

^^^^^^Some manufacturers do not want goose neck hitches on their units because of the extra stress created. I have spoken to several who installed them without contacting the manufacturers.

It pains me to say this and I am not siding with the manufacturer but I wonder how many have failed because of the GN and then blame the manufacturer.

As has already been noted as soon as I saw that I looked for the goose neck. I would never consider purchasing a fiver if I knew that had been used.

That looks like the same crack I had under my slide. Took to factory to be fixed. A wall support weld broke. They re-welded and braced then fixed the wall. Good as new.

Hi,

Three fifth wheels back, I put a gooseneck adapter on it. Briefly. For one short trip.

Visually, there was unusual movement of the pin box -- on every start and stop. It was so unnerving to me (a non-engineer, but a reasonably rational and cautious fellow) that I removed it after that one trip and reinstalled a standard fifth wheel hitch. To my eye, it had to be transmitting unintended forces back into the rest of the frame.

FWIW.
