This tire looks bad to me, time to replace it?

This tire looks bad to me. After searching on the internet for something similar, I didn't find any photos that looked the same. About 5,000 miles on a fifth wheel, using Tire Minders, inflated cold to 80 psi per the nameplate. I've weighed the truck and trailer, and the trailer axles aren't overloaded. Ridgeway brand, ST235/80R16, load range E, new from the factory. The pictures aren't the best, and show both the spare tire which is good, and the suspect tire. The suspect tire has a round cross section across the width of the tread. The good tire has a flat looking cross section across the width of the tread. The tape measure is meant to help show how much distance there is between round and flat. Thanks in advance, Rich.

So I understand....

These tires are exactly the same make, model and size?
These tires are exactly the same tire pressure when the photos were taken?

Hello, yes to both questions. The spare tire is on a steel rim, and the suspect tire is on an alloy rim.

I’ve had that before and I think it was a broken belt in the tire. You absolutely don’t want to continue driving on it. I did and ended with a flat after a bad pothole.

I agree about the interior belt having given away.

Given the mileages you report, take similar pictures of the other Ridgeway tires showing that it is not all tires doing this.....just this one.
Then contact Ridgeway. Be professional, provide all the specifics along with photos, to see what they offer.

BTW.....What is the date code on the sidewalls of all the tires. That should be included to Ridgeway also.

There is another possibility. That the rim is too small (in width) for the tire. Check the widths of the spare rim vs. the mounted TT rim.

Yes the tire has broken belts, hince the round crowning effect. Replace asap. Do not drive with it.

Yes definitely belt separation I would also consider going up at least one load range from E to F or even G

Thanks everyone for the input. Belt breakage sounds bad.

Only one of the four tires mounted on alloy rims has this issue.

The date code of one of the tires (all I could get to easily) is 4519. The 45th week of the year 2019, early November of 2019. The manufacturer info is in the attached photo.

I put on the spare tire, since we are currently traveling, and made an appointment to replace all the tires with Goodyear Endurance tires when we get home later this week.

There's an adage I use when taking stuff out of the refrigerator or dealing with tires and brakes. When in doubt, throw it out.

Walmart appears to have the best price on Goodyear Endurance tires. You need to talk with your local store to see if they have the proper equipment to install them for you on site, Otherwise, you can bring in yours on the rims and they'll mount and balance them for $9 each (+$3 for new stems). This includes lifetime balancing. For an additional $10 a tire, you get lifetime flat repair and replacement. Not a bad deal for a national chain. Take your old tires with you if you don't want to be charged a $5 recycling fee on each tire.

I bought a set of 4 Carlisle load range g at Walmart on 2018 have about 20000 miles on them and by the looks of tread wear etc I expect I will get another 20K. They have a similar tread pattern to the commercial tires we used to install on commercial vehicles. Walmart had the best price around 700 for 4 installed and balanced. Oh 16" rims

From my experience both as an auto/truck mechanic for over 50 years and personal experience owning and working om RVs and trailers it is very common for the industry to use the lowest bidder to supply tires etc and to only meet the bare minimum when it comes to tire load range and a lot of other components such as electronics etc.
My 5er came from the factory with load range E which was fine if we weren't going to tow it with a load and on rough roads and side winds. After 1 year and about 8000 miles 2 blowouts and 2 belt separation experiences I put my mechanics hat on tapped into my knowledge and upgraded to a higher load range from e to g which I should have insisted on the dealer doing when I purchased the new 5er. 3 years and about 20k miles later I still have the same tires and no issues or concerns. Remember that the tire salesman only makes money if he sells you tires in a lot of cases. Some are honest and will do the right thing for the customer and some only care about the sale.

That tire is about to fail very soon! The inner cord has ruptured, as evidenced by the highly crowned center. Trailer tires are highly susceptible to this due to the side bending stress when cornering. They should be routinely visually inspected for crowning, and they will also look taller when viewed from the side, so it is easy to spot. The larger diameter also shifts more load to them and makes their situation worse. Sometimes you can catch the rupture in progress and the tire will be obviously out of round or lumpy when rotated. If the same mileage, the other tires will follow soon and should be changed ASAP.

You are going to need much higher quality valve stems then $3 stems. The $3 stems are going to be standard rubber stems rated at not more than 65 PSI.

and a good chance they only cost the Company around $0.14 or less from China.

Reassuring to trust your $100+ tire to a device only selling for pennies, right?

Rims come in different widths. You need to go to the tire manufacturer's website and look up the acceptable rim width range for each specific tire in each size. You risk premature tire wear / damage as well as possible blowout.

Back in the 60's and 70's custom mag rims were popular with street racers, but you had to carefully match the rubber to the rim and wheel opening, as well as the rim offset to your fenders.

Last summer I had 5 tires mounted at WalMart. They didn't charge any extra for the high pressure steel stems.
YMMV
