tires age out
Was wondering if folks here had ever heard about tires aging out before they wear out. Tried doing a couple searces but got no "hits".

Definitely. Most trailer tires dry rot before the tread wears out.

Five years was the criteria for cars and light trucks in the fleet shop where I worked. Three years on steer tires on the large trucks.

I ignored this and had an 8 year old tire blow out at speed on the Ohio Turnpike a year ago. Proper cold inflation, etc. Simply forgot how old they were. 5 year replacement regardless of mileage is the "rule" I ignored. I replaced all 5 tires. Etrailer shipped the tires mounted on new wheels to my house and I swapped them out in less than an hour

I had always heard (read) that 5 years maybe 6 from the manufacture date stamped on the tire was the safe way to determine replacement date. I know I have never had a tire wear out before age-out...

Is this a trick question or research about the info that is "out there"?
On my last trailer I replaced the tires at 7 years old. Lots of tread left.

Don't ask why I still have these but these tires came on our 1988 Terry when it was new. So yes these tires are from 1988 (yes probably older)....... Plenty of tread though.
......... and no I would not run them on the road.............

Slide show: Tire aging and service life for your reading pleasure. <--- that's a link.
And this from my 2017 Expedition owners manual. No reason trailer tires are any different:
Quote:
Age
WARNINGS
Tires degrade over time
depending on many factors
such as weather, storage
conditions, and conditions of use
(load, speed, inflation pressure)
the tires experience throughout
their lives.
In general, tires should be
replaced after six years
regardless of tread wear.
However, heat caused by hot
climates or frequent high loading
conditions can accelerate the
aging process and may require
tires to be replaced more
frequently.

+1 for five years from date of mfr code on sidewall. With all the extra weight and handling issues involved with towing, I will not takes chances.

For those that aren't wearing out your tires, how many miles are you putting on them? My brother-in-law's trailer tires are only 3 years old and his tread is getting very worn, BUT they have probably 20k miles on them, if not more, including some dirt/gravel roads.
I replaced our tires last summer before our first big camping trip since buying our trailer used. They were hardly worn and looked perfect but were 10 years old. This year we also purchased a TPMS as extra insurance.

The cost of tires versus the headache of roadside repair and or possible damage to the TT, isn’t worth pushing them further then 5 years at the max, IMHO.
