Trailer Brake Controller

It seems my trailer brake is going bad on me. This is the second one in about 5 years. It started clicking on and off as if the brakes were being applied. I thought there was a shortage somewhere at first. Now the numbers appear weird when I apply the brakes. What brake controller are you guys running out there? Something that has lasted over a year or 2. Nice that newer trucks come with them installed. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks I have been looking at Prodigys. Nothing but good responses from them so far.

I recommend the Prodigy P2 or P3.

You can find the controller and wiring harnesses at RVAdventure and other places. Search around for the best price you can.

Etrailer has some good videos on the setup and installation. Its not a hard install if you have the harness to match your truck. Otherwise, its a bit more involved. Its plug and play if you have the harness.

Yea I hooked up the one I have. I also looked at the ones on Etrailer. Wanted to get opinions before ordering. Definately getting the quick connect.

Is your truck not still covered by warranty? Also make sure you are able to install an after market controller I seem to remember reading something about this because the one that comes installed is hard wired.

My truck did not come with a brake controller installed. I'll be getting a P2 with the quick connect. Looks like etrailer has the best price with free shipping. Thanks guys.

I put a Maxbrake on my truck. It tee's into one of the brake lines from the master cylinder with a pressure sensor. Calibrated it to the truck and was good to go.

My trailer does exactly what the truck does when I push the brake pedal. It's very nice not having to fiddle with the controller as I tow. I just drive.

I ended up going with the prodigy 2. Local trick trucks matched etrailers online price. I like that it comes with preset settings but I still have to adjust it to make sure it's at the correct setting for my truck. On setting 3 I don't feel the truck being pushed or pulled when braking so i may leave it as is. Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions.

Thumbs up

Prodigy is a good controller and they keep improving them. I had a Voyager before and then went with a P2 and I really like it. I guess the P3 is even an upgrade from that, but the P2 works great.
Good choice

My P2 works great, I like the feature where it can detect if the TV is stopping quickly (has a pendulum inside that swings forward on quick stops) and applys more braking force to the TT brakes, even more than what you are asking for with pedal pressure on the TV. I use about the same pedal pressure towing as I do not towing and this how I decide if the brake controler is adjusted the way I want.

Which setting are you currently using?
Although the trailer I pull doesn't really fall into the category of needing the 6.3 setting (according to the P2 owner's manual), it definitely improved stopping power further to go up to 6.3 coming from 6.2.
If you're not at the max setting yet, it's worth a try

Thats going to very dependent on the TV, the weight of the TT, etc. My Roo/Ram package I'm running a 6.8. When I come to a stop I don't want to feel the trailer at all - either pushing or tugging on me. That's where you want to be, IMO.

My P2 is set on 3.5, the approach I take is if the TV has to provide very my braking I increased it, but it is doing good at this setting the TT does most of it's own stopping. There are times like if I have to get on the brakes hard I will use the manual lever to assist by adding additional brakes on the TT.
