Question Why do tire makers mould the max PSI in such small print on the sidewall?

I've often wondered why tires always have the tire pressure listed on the side of the tire in such small print that you need three pair of readers stacked and a microscope to see what it is.

Do they not want us to know that number...or what?

Why don't they put that number (max tire pressure) as large as the tire size is moulded on the sides of the tires?

Since all the tires in the US are that way I would venture to guess that it's a regulatory requirement, .i.e type of lettering, size of lettering and location of lettering. If you have ever read 49 CFR you will realize that USDOT has an affinity for "labels & markings".

Not really impressive. I took the pic of it in the second post. We stock them, and I just pulled one off the rack and snapped a pic with my phone.[emoji3]

Tire press readability

I have said for years that the government would have accomplished more by making the requirement to have the max pressure and load rating a minimum size of 3/4”, than requiring a tire pressure monitoring system that has less features than the aftermarket units and is so costly to replace the batteries. But that’s what happens when the government and special interest money makers get involved. Tire makers have no trouble making the name big letters.

What manufacturers are hoping

They want you to return to the tire dealer to read it for you. While you are there they can change your shocks, do a front end alignment, check your ball joints, and refill your muffler fluid.

My thought exactly, just came in from crawling around on my knees with a flash light trying to read it. There is not a good reason for it to be so small, plenty of room.

Somewhere in all governments is the "This will screw them up" branch. It's located in a cold, damp windowless basement room and staffed by little old bitter grey haired men. That's where these decisions are made. In Canada, it's probably located in the most remote part of Saskatchewan. (yup, that's a real place- you can google it).

I have Goodyear Endurance tires and 65 PSI Max is almost as big letters as Goodyear. Car tires are a different matter, you need a magnifying glass to see it.

Use a label at the valve stem.

Once I find it I make a label and put it at the valve stem.
Clean off the wheel with alcohol first and the label will stick good.
