Would you move 16" spare to back bumper?

Our 5er has the 16" spare in the front storage. I am thinking about moving it to the back bumper. Any reason I should not do this? Would free up space up front for other stuff.

I did that on my Silverback as soon as I got it, and tens of thousands of miles later it's still solid. It's a large fiver with a corresponding frame, but I do periodically inspect the welds between the frame and bumper just to be sure no fatigue cracks are developing.

My spare is on a pickup style mount under the frame and behind the back trailer axle. Never a problem. I have a lot more weight than that on a heavy duty receiver and cargo rack. Never a problem with those either.

This. While having the spare on the back bumper is fine, moving it underneath is a better idea in my opinion. Especially if it is on a rack that slides out so you can gain easy access to check pressure and get to it w/o having to crawl under the trailer. Tire is out of the way, out of the sun, and easy to get to. And if weight placement is a concern, you can put it where it benefits you the most.just my two centavos.

It would probably be best to continue storing it flat either where it is or under the trailer.

Tires stored upright on the rear bumper or elsewhere exposed to the elements have a history of exploding where they set.

I think I'll leave it in the front storage.

I do plan to carry a 28 gal tote on the back ladder.

I have never heard of a tire exploding because of the position it is stored, matter of fact, I have never heard of a vehicle spare tire exploding in all of my 74 yrs. I did see a tire explode that was filled with nitrogen, but it belonged to A300-600 FedEx cargo jet.

Seeing as how you have been on the forum since 2009, you should of read plenty about spares on RV bumpers failing without ever touching the ground....

Personnaly I would check out the BAL under mount spare tire carrier. Look at some of the Heartland 5th wheels to see what I am talking about. I was considering adding one to my Cardinal TT which has the spare on the bumper. The tire is exposed to the elements and is in the way if you want to add one of those cargo carriers. The BAL is about $110.00 in the Route 66 catalogue and probably cheaper on line.

I personally haven't seen any "spares" exploding after just sitting on a rear bumper rack.

Now if one believes in the "if it's on the internet it has to be true" philosophy--------


Not saying a tire somewhere hasn't exploded but usually tire "explosions" are associated with the act of inflation or accident.

My previous TT had an under mount spare tire carrier. Was great as it got the spare out of the sun, off the rear bumper, and out of the way.

It was a PITA when the spare was actually needed. Mine was a "winch up" type mount and I've seen some that are sliding type mounts that allow the tire and wheel to be lowered and slid out for access.

Either way, one is going to get their knees dirty.

Not sure exactly to say about the bumper mount tire rack. My FR came with a bumper mount spare, I did put a spare tire cover over it though. Here's the thing though - there are tens of thousands of Jeeps on the road with rear mount spares - a lot covered - a lot not and a lot are getting beat to death & left out in the weather. This doesn't imply that no one has had a problem with them - I just haven't heard anyone griping about it with my Jeep friends.

That was kind of my point too. Now add all the travel trailers, Class C Motor Homes, as well as Slide-in Camper's with the spare mounted on the front bumper of the pickup------------some covered, some not.

I wouldn’t hesitate. I’d also opt for the rear bumper over underneath as I do go to more remote locations and tow down gravel and occasionally muddy roads. Spares underneath can get covered in mud and gravel.

BIL's trailer has the fold down cargo rack and the spare is bolted to that. With rack up it's vertical but with rack down it's horizontal and hangs down more than I'd like. My Wildcatt has the winch up spare at the very front so it doesn't get in the way and can't hang up.

Didn't say it never happens. Just haven't seen the epidemic some would like us to think exists.

You'd think that if there were an epidemic of exploding spares and the accompanying risk to human life, we'd have another regulation covering the proper mounting locations for spares.

Don't know where you saw it in this thread that it was claimed to be an epidemic, but then I don't know what prompts a lot of your replies.....
