Camping savers

Went on a long weekend camping trip with my '18 Rockwood A122. A couple things happened to me that I thought was worthy of passing on to any new enthusiasts. Actually I probably learned them here a couple years ago but I digress.............

Thing one. When I got to the campground it was without the lid to my 2 tank LP cover. It blew off somewhere. I ordered a new one and have since drilled a couple of holes in the lid and zip tied it to the cover. It may come off but it won't blow away and get lost.

Thing two. Power problems.
The campground I stay at has no staff on the weekend. There is an emergency number but no staff. All day Saturday I notice my microwave time goes from being set to no time showing indicating the power is off.

Then my gf says the microwave LED's are off altogether. Then I go outside and look at the breaker and it isn't tripped but I touch it and I hear the camper come back to life (Heat Pump, beep, etc.). So I come back in and the heat pump kicks off and the power dies again, rinse, lather, repeat.

So here we are after dark on Saturday, it's very cold outside and my power station is NOT WORKING.

When I bought the camper and was rounding up life savers I bought a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter. I was able to plug us into the 50 amp breaker which was working thereby keeping us from freezing and generally being miserable.

Also unrelated and having no issue on this trip I'd like to add that I always hook up a water pressure regulator.

So that is my advice. Zip tie the LP gas lid on to the cover, buy a 50 to 30 amp adapter, and use a water pressure regulator.

Happy camping.

Here's a pic of the LP cover attachment. Won't be losing this again.

Good advice. Especially about the 30 to 50 amp pigtail.

I converted our unit to 50 amp service, but I carry a 50 to 30 pigtail and a 50 to 15 amp pigtail just in case.

X2

Another 'saver' is a water bandit or water thief.

Good idea on the cover........I've always had my LP cover on with the knobs in the front and the tabs in the rear....I find it easier just to pull off the entire cover to turn the propane off or on then try and use the the lid access.

I should have mentioned I also have a 30 amp female to 115v male for plugging into 110v 15 amp power.

Surprisingly enough if nothing else is on the circuit the A/C will work which essentially means everything will work.

I have found in wind conditions (40+ MPH), the plastic chocks are useless. They simply blow away on packed gravel or concrete (or grass). Harbor Freight sells heavy rubber chocks that won't move in the wind for $5 each ($6 without coupon). Also carry light rope to tie to the handle to control the roof when opening/closing in really high winds. Lost a camping trip in Wyoming because I didn't have these things.

While it doesn't ruin a camping trip immediately, having the battery box cover blow away while towing down the highway is the pits. Those stock polypropylene straps are very difficult to get really tight, and tend to rot in the sun. And one strap won't hold a 2 battery cover. I installed eye bolts or screw eyes and used 2 bungy cords to hold the battery cover on. Bonus is that the bungy cords make battery box cover removal and installation much easier and faster than the straps.

The zip tie trick will work for as long as it takes that thing to flop around and tear them right through the lid. I gave up on trying to keep a lid on it and just bungee a small tarp over it when stored at home and once we get to a campsite.

Zip Ties seem not as good as before, the ones that I buy at a discount place seem to dry rot and die quickly.

You might want to check the package. Some are rated outside/uv protected and some aren't.
