Just some pointers - we went a different route, and put a single post to support the dining table, plus a support on the front wall. Addressing your points:
- table is too large. If you make it smaller, you can no longer use the dinette as another bed. The table is sized to fit in the foot well between the seats. We do use the dinette as a bed about half time, so size could not be altered.
- too heavy. Agreed - made from particle board and or heavy plywood. Framed construction would allow a lighter table top. However, this would limit knee room even more, especially if table top in the raised position is lowered.
- PIA to put up/take down. My primary objective was to get rid of the stock folding legs, which took up a lot of space under the table, both folded and open. The table was too big, heavy and awkward to take out of the A-frame to use outside, so that functionality was no longer needed.
- too high. I thought it was too low. Normal kitchen table height is 28-30 inches. I wanted at least 28 inches.
