I considered a Scamp during the search for a camper that resulted in the purchase of my A122s. So anyway, I am driving to the grocery store today on US 59 and I see a brand new Scamp 13 footer driving slow in front of me. While passing it, I see it is being towed by a VW Beetle. The Bug was also brand new and had a new Thule luggage carrier on top. It was a cute combination.

It was also a very slow combination. I tried to get a photo, but simply could not slow down enough to get it to pass me, even after exiting and slowing down on the feeder street. Evidently, the Bug could handle the 1500 lbs or so, but not very well. It's one of those "caravan"combos the the British Top Gear boys complain about.

The item for me that short stopped my consideration of the Scamp was the exterior height after adding the roof to AC. It was over 8 feet, and that would be hard to hide behind a fence in my neighborhood. The other real disadvantage is the 6'3" ID height, which gives one barefoot inch of clearance from my OD height. Its a nice camper though and a 19 foot Scamp would have been more spacious for the same weight as my AFrame.

This post reminded me of my years with the 17-foot Casita. Scamps and Casitas are great campers if you can live in a small space with a wet bathroom. The 17 is Casita's biggest model, while the 19-foot Scamp is an interesting little fifth wheel, which I imagine is the smallest fifth wheel in production.

Used Casitas (and probably Scamps, too) are so sought-after by some that I sold mine within 45 minutes of listing it online. I kept it for over three years and sold it for just $1,500 less than the brand-new purchase price of $15,000 (the 2004 price). Several people called me and said they could be at my house the next day with cash, sight unseen. Some were willing to travel more than 1,000 miles.

There are people who are just fascinated with these little fiberglass campers. Every time we stopped at a restaurant to eat, there would be several people waiting outside and asking us for a tour of the camper. Of course, same thing at campgrounds.

Never a problem with our Casita, but eventually the lack of space (and the knowledge that we could make a killing on the resell) led us in a different direction. But it was loads of fun while we had it.

I just can't imagine driving that combo any place where the hills are higher than a freeway interchange. This one, like the one I saw, didn't have an AC on it. Something that would make it all but useless for most of the year in Texas. Right now it is 70 degrees outside, not too bad inside a camper sitting in the sun as long as you have a fan. The forecast for Saturday is 78 so the inside temperature of a camper sitting in the sun would start to get uncomfortable in the afternoon.

We also considered a Casita & Scamp but settled on "The Little One" after living in it for 10 weeks last winter in AZ - know we made the right choice. The slide out makes all of the difference for long term use. Both Scamp & Casita are very well made trailers.

I had considered buying an used Scamp that needed some TLC. I ended up passing on it for several reasons including that it didn't have a bathroom.

We saw a Skamp 5th... down in Myrtle beach .... and were most interested .... nice by up for the A122 ... no leaks .. from what i can tell ....
