Rockwood 2017 A214hw cargo capacity

Just purchased this new hardside. Dealer recommended a weight distribution hitch, so I got that too. I'm about to get started loading the trailer and I am concerned about the 611 pounds of cargo capacity. That isn't much! I was wondering if anyone here has had any problems with exceeding the cargo capacity on this model. By the way, great forum, lots of great information here. Thank you all

Welcome to the forum
You should not exceed the manufacturer's capacity.
Put in what you need with food, household items, then being careful of the add-ons, nice to haves and might needs. Then take it down to a scale (Truck Stop/Public) and weigh it.

Nice camper!

Makes me think that it might be time for an upgrade.

Only, how does that little red tow vehicle manage to pull it?

Enjoy your camper and camping!

Welcome

Welcome to A-frame camping! BTW, we let the big guys snicker at us. We laugh as we pass them sitting at the gas pump.

The issue is that Forest River uses almost the same frame, axles, and tires on all A-frame models. As weight of the unit itself goes up, the cargo capacity goes down. The axles, brakes, and tires are probably the limiting factors on the GVWR.

On our base model A122 we use about 300lbs of cargo - includes dual 6V batteries, foam toppers for both bed and dinette, limited cooking gear, limited tool set, some food.

We normally travel with the water tank and water heater full - 170lbs. But that is critical out west where not all sites have water - especially in winter.

The frame is sized for a certain weight, but more importantly, the tires and axles are sized for that also. Chances are, the tires will have almost NO excess load capability beyond the weight rating of the camper.

If 600 lbs is not enough, you need to load the extra in the tow vehicle. Just be careful not to exceed the cargo capacity of the vehicle.

Yep, that's what I will do. Minimal equipment, just the essentials. 10x10 ez up, foam topper, 2 chairs, kitchen stuff etc. Then off to the scale. Boy, that weight distribution hitch is heavy. Wish I didn't need that. Tow vehicle is a jeep cherokee and it's required per manual.

Be aware that the factory "As Built" weight tag DOES NOT INCLUDE a battery or the propane tanks. Group 24 battery weighs in at about 42 lbs, each full LP cylinder is 37 lbs.

Be very careful of your tongue weight. It should be 12 to 15% of the total loaded weight of the camper.

Went to the scale today loaded up, but no water. Trailer was 3060 pounds(unjhitched) hitch weight 380 pounds, and jeep was 4400 lbs unhitched. (Hitched the jeep was 4820 and trailer was 2680 for 7500 combined gross weight.)

Trailer gvwr is 3341, jeep can take up to 450 lbs on the toung, and jeeps gvwr is 5500.
So I guess I'm ok. Thanks for the help!
