Co-incidentally, did you read (or hear) the news report just the other day about a person who swam/rode on a manatee and got in a bunch of trouble? Manatees are justifiably protected because they are an endangered species. Apparently that person just plain didn't know any better and faces a huge fine and possible jail time.

That actually happened at Fort DeSoto, our first camping location of this trip. The kayak rental location required us to watch a video before going out. At this location you are permitted to pet them if they come up to you. There is a park ranger on a paddle board to make sure everyone is following the rules. He told us if people are bothering them they just swim out. He said there were a lot of manatees that day so everyone was following the rules. :-) The kayak was the perfect height to sit and see them.
