10 year old 30# tanks

So, my tanks are now 10 years old.

Will I have trouble getting them refilled?

Anyone get their tanks recertified?

Love to hear about it.

A few years ago, the US government dropped it to 10; then I heard that recently that was removed as part of regulation reduction.

Now, I have no clue what the rule is.

If you travel to Canada, it is 10 years.

If you want to keep them take them to a real propane distributor, they can re-certify them. I would check the price first because it may almost as cheap to buy new ones.

Just make a couple of grills out of the old ones!

They would be pretty small grills ...

Ameri-Gas web site

https://www.amerigas.com/amerigas-bl...r-propane-tank

All grill cylinders require recertification 12 years from the date it was manufactured, and every 5 years after that.

So what do you do when it’s time to recertify your tank? Just follow the quick and easy steps below, and you’ll be grilling (safely) in no time!

Visit www.amerigas.com/propane-locations and enter your zip code to find the nearest AmeriGas location.

DOT Halts 10 Year Cylinder Requal

I will call them and let you know what they say.

I had called a local Propane dealer and they would recertify 30 pounders for 10.00.

I generally just go to a place that does tank exchanges. Give them your old one and get a newer filled one in return.

Shop around for prices. I just had two recertified for $4 each as long as you got a refill with it. Good for 5 years.

I still have the 20 pound LP tank that came with my first Char Broil grill in Colorado when I bought the house I just sold back in February.

And I bought that house on May 27, 1997...grill came a week or two later!

So it is 21 years old.

I've always filled it up at an Amerigas dealer that was near my house, and then once at a different one that was servicing the RV park I wintered in this past winter after I sold the house.

Never once been recertified, unless they just did it and didn't tell me or charge me to do it.

That tank is hooked up right now to my grill at my new place!

You can see it chained to the fence post lower right in this shot:

I can't recall a single time anyone has ever checked the inspection date before filling my tanks. There was a big flap back when OPD's were introduced but I just took my relatively new 30# tanks to the local distributor and they spun in some new OPD's.

I think that as long as your tanks don't look like you hung them off the back of a saltwater fishing boat, covered with rust and crud, nobody's going do much more than hook up and fill.

Not saying that that's the right way, just the way it seems wherever I go. Then again, I usually get propane along the road at a gas station or campground. Haven't been to a distributor for 15 or more years.

I took one of my 30-pound tanks with me a couple of weeks ago when I was at an RV park about 30 miles from Winslow, Arizona to get it filled up.

I, of course, had to go stand on that corner...then on the way back I stopped at a Love's station and had it filled up.

This is the only time I've ever had someone mention it and check it.

Tank was just over three years old...just as my 5'ver is!

took the barbeque 20 lb tank in to the local propane distributor to have it filled. they checked and it was 10 years old. they did the recertification for $10. i paid $1.50/gal and the total cost of recertification and refill was just over $17.

tank certification

I have had the certification on my tanks checked several times. Call around for prices on certification. Inspection takes about 30 seconds. Is the collar attached? Not dented? Not rusted at the foot ring. etc.

I had a pair of expired 30s exchanged at my doorstep by a local company called My Propane Butler.

And I had another pair recertified and filled by Amerigas for $75.
