These S-Crates that I use are taller and made to fit propane tanks and a small price to pay ... they secure easily in your truck bed https://www.milkcratesdirect.com/sup...AmUfEALw_wcB**

I have a 100# propane tank on my property in NC that I used for a gas dryer. I transported the tank in my truck to get it filled. The gas dealer advised me the tanks had to be vertical when leaving the property due to DOT regulations. He agreed with me that it would be stupid to transport it around the winding mountain roads in that position and said once I leave his property it would be better to transport laying down for the 15 minute ride. I had it secured with ratchet straps and 4 x 4 wood wedges.

I've always transported mine in a milk crate and used cam lock strap to prevent movement either in the back of truck or car. Don't want it getting tossed around empty or full. Your call!

I look at it this way. What's the "Safest" way to transport it ? If I know I can secure it safer with it horizontal...then that's how I'd do it. As far a laying a tank on it side for an extended period of time, think about a propane forklift. The tank spends it's lifetime laying horizontal. My 2 cents.

here is how i transport a cylinder. move the front passenger seat all the way forward. put the tank on the rear floor behind the passenger seat. then move the seat back and it will wedge the tank between the front and rear seat and hold it in place.

We ALL do things in our everyday lives that may or may not be 'safe.'

The purpose of FRF is to provide information and assistance to members who are seeking help. We can only provide information for them to make an informed decision as to how to proceed and not mandate any action. The Op's question was regarding the safety of transporting small propane tanks in a horizontal position. Several resources have been provided to allow for an informed personal decision. How members proceed is up to them.

And I agree totally.

We often see these threads drift into "The sky is falling" mentality and my hope is that folks CAN make an informed decision.

Now... I'm off to figure out how to safely run my refrigerator on propane while going down the road...

A forklift cylinder is mounted on the forklift in such a way that the relief valve is always in the expansion air space so no liquid propane will escape.

The manual and u-haul link previously provided state that even forklift cylinders should be transported upright to ensure the relief valve stays in an expansion space during transport to/from the refill facility.

As I stated, just passing along the correct information, and people can decide for themselves what they feel safe doing.

Don't forget to turn on the water heater too so you will have hot water when you arrive at your destination.

Does drinking water from the fresh water tank count?

Yeah...I agree with the Relief Valve should always be positioned as stated.

A forklift propane tank isn't the same has a 30lb propane tank.

Propane powered forklifts primarily use 33 pound cylinders as their fuel source and are equipped for liquid service. Because the cylinders are designed for liquid service, they have to be placed properly on the lift truck to operate correctly. Improper cylinder installation can result in loss of power and eventually complete loss of engine functionality.

Forklifts with improperly mounted cylinders will generally stop operating before the bottle is empty. Without correct alignment of the cylinder and bracket orientation pin, the liquid level will fall below the service diptube and propane liquid will no longer be withdrawn from the cylinder, shutting down the forklift engine. The forklift will run once the cylinder has properly been repositioned, allowing liquid propane to flow through the service diptube.

Not a good idea. The safety valve is on the tops part of the valve body. If tank increases in pressure due to heat, liquid propane will leak out. Creates a dangerous situation. OK if empty.
