CO/LP Detector Won't quit making alarm

I've read a few other posts about detectors making their alarm sound when the battery is low. Mine is a Safe-T-Home STA 35-472 in a Rockwood Premier 2716 Pop-up.

I charged my battery overnight and also ran regular electricity and the detector still makes its lovely chirp about every 30 seconds. I have done numerous reset/tests.

So now I disconnected the fuse from my main control panel - this caused the green light to go off, but the chirping is still there. Does this unit have an internal battery that still works for awhile?

Being we're going camping in a few days and my dealer is 150 miles away I am looking for a temporary fix. Am I able to simply pull out the detector or snip a wire until I get a replacement unit?

Over the past several years we have had the same issues with both our propane detector and our CO detector. In both cases we had to replace them. Both of them have a limited life span. When you buy a replacement take a close look at the date on the back. I found several that we almost out of date and still on the shelf.

Are you sure it is the Co/LP detector? It might be the smoke detector instead, I would look again, you would not be the first one that has this issue.......change battery in smoke detector.

A low house battery can cause this on some hard wired models.

Check house battery voltage.

If you want a quick fix. Remove it & throw it away. Go to Home Depot and buy a combination smoke/ carbon monoxide detector for $25.
BTW, they do say to replace these units every 10 years.

For safety reasons all co/lp detectors are hot wired directly into the battery. No fuse or cutoff switch will disable it.

Yes, these fail and age out often. Replace it.

Check both house battery and internal backup batteries in the alarms. Our alarms always give us a wonderful "welcome back" after a full power down of a day or more. An alarm may have a capacitor that will hold power to allow chirp for some minutes after all battery power has been disconnected.

The smoke and CO alarms do not detect LP. A new CO/LP detector is under $100.

The OP send me a PM this morning saying that it was his smoke detector that was chirping, changed the battery and all is good. CO/LP detector operates properly. I did ask him/her to give feedback here.......

Note to all:

Those residential combined LP/CO detectors use house current with a battery for backup. Download and read the manual. The battery will only power it for a few hours. The CO only alarms ARE battery powered and will operate up to 10 years. I have not found a LP detector that will operate on a battery for a duration usable for an RV.

I installed a Kidde CO only alarm in our Sunseeker and replaced the combined LP/CO alarm with a LP only detector in an attempt to eliminate the false alarms I was getting. So far, so good.

I do not believe this is true in all cases.

In my FR Solera MH I had (have) a problem with the detector going off. If I both disconnect from shore power AND turn the battery disconnect switch to off, then the CO/propane detector is powered off.

I could never find a fuse in the fuse bank. I believe that there is an internal fuse for the unit.

The alarm on our Sunseeker has an inline fuse holder. It is behind the alarm. It is wired directly from the battery shutoff. If either the battery shutoff is on or the coach has power through the convertor from the shore line, there is power to the inline fuse.

Mine is in line with the fridge. If you pull the fuse, it kills power to the fridge.

Another possibility on CO detectors; a wise old repairman told me...vacuum the dirt and hair out of it---and yup, he was right.
Worth a try.
But...don't go without one! Stay safe...

Stand corrected. Should have said many are wired directly into the battery, not all. The point is they make is hard to disable the alarm, for good reason.
