Composite propane cylinders

Anyone use the new composite lpg cylinders? I've used one all season and love it. Some people have said they had a hard time getting it filled but I have not experienced that. Would love to know others personal experience.

I'm using Viking cylinders and the local propane store didn't even ask any questions. I think they're great and really like the light weight.

That's why I'm using a 17lb viking tank. Yes it's lighter has a big base and I can see the propane level.

I have had our 2 Viking propane tanks for a couple of years with no problems. Sure have saved the weight up front!

Given a steel 30 lb tank weighs about 25 lbs empty and 56 lbs full, a composite tank at 17 lbs really only saves you about 8 lbs, so 17 lbs empty and 48 lbs full. Not really a lot of weight savings in the grand scheme of things.

To me, their real advantage is being able to actually see the level in the tank.

Given their price, I don't think I would ever buy them for either the weight savings OR the ability to see level unless I had to replace the steel ones that came with my trailer for some reason.

Now, if I could bargain with the dealer when I bought my TT to give me composite over steel from the get-go, I'd be interested.

I don't know if I would get one for my rigs tanks but as a spare for emergencies and more important the BBQ I love the wide base and seeing the propane level.

I've not used them for propane but in the fire service we love them for compressed air in our air packs?

Who is still making them? The one vendor that I remember making them lost their something or other certification and couldn’t make/sell them after a while.

It was Lite cylinder that lost there DOT exemption. We got stuck with a few we couldn't sell. We don't deal in composites anymore
