My new Forest River 2018 Sunseeker leaks like sieve, so I just use the range hood exhaust fan as it pulls lots of makeup air in all the gaps and air leaks in the coach. My range hood actually vents outside the coach unlike some more expensive coaches that do recirculate cooking fumes though a cheap carbon filter and back into the coach. Sometimes more money doesn’t always buy more functionality.

Do you crack open windows when cooking?

The gist of what I think I am reading is that unless the stove is burning a yellow flame instead of a healthy blue one, the stove is pretty much NOT a dangerous source of harmful gases (CO and CO2). But most Rv-ers either crack a window or use an external venting range hood fan combined with an open roof vent to keep a good circulation of air through the RV while cooking. This helps reduce humidity, reduce heat and odors, and clears out any trace CO or CO2 that may be generated. This may or may not assist the AC system at the same time. Thanks, guys!

Curious

I couldn't resist.

I put my anemometer on the outside of the exhaust vent, with windows and doors shut I measured 3.8 m/s and with a window cracked 7.2 m/s air velocity (which is not volume).

Not a scientific test under lab conditions but close enough I guess.

The same in my Cedar Creek. I just use the range hood that vents outside.

Been RVing for 17 years...never cracked a window when cooking, and as far as I know I'm not dead yet. On our last two fifth wheels we've never used the oven since they have convection/microwaves but we do use the stove top burners.

Like others have pointed out...these things are far from air-tight even with the windows not cracked.

Decided the range hood ventilation fan external exhaust vent was essentially the same thing as a cracked window with a cracked open roof vent nearby for an "intake". Our Suburban manual does not mention ventilation at all in the safety section. Our "The RV-er's Bible" by Baker and Baker (1997) does instruct the RV-er to crack open a window when heating and cooking. I quote page 264: "Ventilation saves live. Crack the windows open a bit when heating the RV with propane or solid fuel or preparing meals."
What are other folks doing while cooking? What do you recommend?

We crack the kitchen roof vent and turn on the hood fan. Takes the heat and gases off the stove to the great outdoors.

Other than using our microwave, all cooking is done outside on BBQ or toaster oven.

I cook outside if I possibly can. Don't want spatter and odor in such a small space. Generally have windows and vent open when I'm in the pod.

I find it sort of funny that the reason we open the window a bit and run the range hood has not been mentioned yet. If we don't run the fan and open the window a crack, we get the smoke alarm going off about half the time!

We do a lot of cooking on the Smokey Joe but beans and such go on the stove and it seems that the proximity of the smoke detector to the stove makes the darn thing go off even if there isn't any smoke (maybe just the heat?)

crack window

I don't like to steam up the place, so yes, I crack a window. I also turn on the fan. Almost always there is a breeze blowing, so i try to open a window on the windward side, with the fan running. that helps immensely.
If it is HOT or Freezing cold, I just don't crack it as wide.
