How/Where do you transport/store propane?

Last year was our first summer in our Sunseeker 2860DS Class C motorhome. We used the grill that came with the coach, it runs off the RV's low pressure propane system, and grew to NOT like it.

This summer we are planning to use a Coleman Roadtrip LXE that wants a standard propane tank. I have seen discussion of changing the gas lines on the grill to make it work with the RV, but have decided it will be easier in the long run to keep the grill as-is and use separate RV than the coach.

This makes me wonder about how people transport their propane tanks. Is it safe to store in the general storage bays with other stuff? I have a vision of them being stored on something attached to the back bumper, but my reading suggests that's a safety no-no.

Thank you.

When I go to Mexico twice a year I tend to carry 3 of the 20lb propane tanks in the basement storage of my 5er in addition to the two 40lb I use 3 old milk crates to put them in keeps them upright and and tie them down so they don't slide
